SRD Puts the Anti in Antihero
I absolutely love Donaldson and think the Gap series is terrific. But the opening story involves rape and brutality of the heroine--almost like those bodice ripper romances without the romance!
Donaldson doesn't specialize in particularly likable heroes/heroines and this series is no exception. But the suspense and conflicts arise from characters as much as from "plot" and that's SRD's strength. Heroism in these books isn't a duty but an obligation of those who see something wrong and are in the only position to fix it.
