Okay, let's pass the time first. What's the most remarkable thing you ever made by hand?

One really BIG wood raft at Cape Alava, Washington. No doubt about it. Center log was over twenty feet long. I secured a wooden box on the raft to hold my backpack and supplies. Two of the logs in the stern had a gap between them for a mounted tiller.

Then, I talked two German students into heading out into the Pacific on this behemoth to Ozette Island. Ozette is the westernmost point of land in the Lower 48. Looks like Gilligan's Island from a distance. About a mile crossing. In the picture, it looks easy...ha ha...NOT. Rip tides try to pull you around the island and out to sea if you are not careful.

Totally crazy. I was sincerely nuts to attempt it. However, we made it over safely and returned a few days later. Boy, were the Park Rangers pissed off at us...(lol)

Yes, they were crocheted, made because I was riveted by the complex antique patterns and felt they were just do-able. Now - now they are cosseted in tissue, boxed from our last move. When they turn up, I'll re-block, mount and frame them, unless the blocking has held up, which would be nothing short of miraculous.

I'm easily mesmerized by handmade articles, whatever their origins. This is both an advantage and a disadvantage in my work as a picture/object framer.

You? Tell about your handwork project that beats all others.

I want to hear about everyone's knitting, popsicle sticks, and mod podge. Or whatever. Boats? Croquembouche? Cutlery?

The AB bookkeeper is going to strangle me...I ordered one of Karen Allen's reversible hats. (lol) 120 bucks. Ha ha...I'm dead meat. Nice hat, though. Sure beats the one I have on my head in the avatar picture there. :p
 
Wow, Lit, you made that whole country. It's kinda small, but has a cute thing going on. The substrate of fishmeal used in construction kind of stinks up the joint, though. But it sure beats Robert's boat. That is just so macho though. He's got the pioneer spirit, obviously, striking out for uncharted public parkland and all. Bravo.

I have not made any nations or ocean-going vessels, but I have made many many things.

One was a lavender short-sleeved sweater with puffed shoulders that could stand up on its own like a suit of armor. It was more like a medieval breastplate than a sweater. In the same fevered flush of creativity, I made my father a yellow crocheted yarmaluke. Too bad he's not Jewish. He was very gracious about it though, being that I was a tender and sensitive teen.

I carved an Oak leaf out of wood once. All very professional, but i had a professional to help me, which may be cheating......i made a face out of pringles once!
 
Food crafts and office crafts are great.

Office crafts are the things you make when you are working in an office and need a break.

I made a Frank Gehry building out of paper a few years ago, for the editors' amusement.

I also made a seriously cool mobile out of paperclips of different sizes. That project took quite a while because I added to it a little every day.

In food crafts, here's one. Take an Entemann's chocolate fudge sheet cake and lift off the icing very carefully. Throw the cake away and replace with cold spaghetti marinara. Replace the fudge. Give to someone special. It's not so beautiful. It's more of a conceptual piece.

I make really nice bookmarks. They are thin crocheted ropes with beads on both ends. I finish the top with a tassle. I've been told I should sell them, but I think it is kind of a weird thing to sell. I'd post a picture (because they sound pretty dorky from my description), but I'm at work.

A colleague of mine loves to make those using a computer program. She is a great librarian and the marks are very popular with the students.
 
In the bookmark realm, back in the 90s I bought some nice bookmarks of laquered handmade paper with dried flowers shellacked on, just because I thought they were pretty.

They inspired me to make one night bookmarks of watercolored birds (Great Blue Heron, Pheasant, Chickadee, etc) on watercolor paper and then laminate them and cut them out. I did all local birds, using the Peterson Guide as a model.

I so hate this post of mine. I hate this tone of voice. I wonder why SFG only talks about what others have done. I know he has some crafts. I bet he built model airplanes and ships.

I reckon he paints those little role play models. He has a whole fantasy landscape in his basement, rolling hills, working waterfalls, the lot.

I would say that this thread is worthless without pictures, but when I created Norway there was no such thing as digital cameras and it was too big to scan so I'm afraid it all went undocumented.

You can have a picture of a pirate instead. He's only half Norwegian though.
