In regards to a basic high school American Literature course, what ten(or so) works should be included?

Are you asking about books for a course on American literature (i.e. books written by American authors) or a high school literature course in America?

I had to read:

Macbeth
Romeo and Juliet
Great Expectations
and some others but I went to a pretty shitty school district. My sisters went to a private school and read Lord of the Flies and such.

I first read it one way, then realized he might have meant the other - thus my question.
