Annoyed With A Giveaway

This has just been annoying me for a bit. I did a giveaway on Goodreads for 2 copies of A Dog of War. Over 400 people signed up and I was thrilled. I sent a signed copy to both of the winners and it was barely a week later one of them posted it for sale on Amazon UK for twice what my publisher is selling it for. It just annoys the hell out of me.

I agree with kelstan, always look at the upside :)

I like Goodreads and keep track of my books there, I love finding new books to read too by checking the reviews, lists and discussions. I had entered the giveaways everyday for years and never won, so I often wondered exactly how they pick their winners, as it seems statistically odd that as many times as I'd entered I'd not won. I no longer enter because it seems a total waste of time.
 
Well, I don't know how they pick the winners, Ronny, but I can tell you I must have participated in, al least, a hundred giveaways and I've won twice. Funny enough, both times were giveaways/books by Sandra Brown. I keep trying to make it third time's the charm, but no such luck so far...

This is why I never come out of the closet with my books, what's the point when there are people out there who have no morals or the backbone to write their own books.:shifty:

Is there a way that you can sue the person for copyright infringements or something? :)

She's not selling as thought she wrote, just as a used book.
 
Depends. If the buyer is someone I know or they want me to, or in the case of the giveaway I just opted to sign them.
 
There are people who make a living wheeling and dealing on the internet. A friend of mine told me that his daughter (adult) would dumpster dive for books which were being discarded at schools and other places and then put the books up for sale on eBay and Craigslist. He told me in one year she had made $4200 this way. A particularly good seller was old, grade school, Catholic catechisms. One "antiquarian" medical book sold for several hundred dollars. Other people go to garage sales and flea markets and buy any old manner of junk they can find and then post it online as an antique. A surprising amount of this junk gets bought if the seller can write a compelling ad for it.

I am truly sorry for the let-down you surely experienced when you saw your book for sale but that is the price you pay whenever you deal with the general public. Is it any wonder that celebrities avoid giving interviews or interacting with fans in many cases? They have probably learned, as now you have, that for every decent person you deal with you can expect to find at least one foil in the form of a scoundrel.

Did they advertise it as a used or new book? If a new book, then you know the person didn't read it.
