Any one read this?

I stcuk with this series several years ago (still ongoign I believe) but I really didn't like Janny Wurt's Wars of Light and Shadow (through 5 long-winded books). I'm usually not the one that complains about methodical writers, description, or wasted pages of do-nothing narrative, but this series takes the cake. I really liked the potential of Arithorn as a character, but if I read 5 books and nothing happens accept displaying to me all the ways an author can conceive to cause nothing to happen, even I get weary.

While hardly the worst epic fantasy I can think of (Terry Brooks, David Eddings, Robert Newcomb, Terry Goodkind), I just can't see recommending this series when so much better is available a options

I have it lying around somewhere - books I found second-hand and bought without really knowing what they were. I plan on reading them at some point, starting with Curse of the Mistwraith, I think that's the appropriate place to start.

Well, I can agree with what you are saying. I tried both Goodkind nad Brooks and got nowhere. However, I have read her before. She wrote the Empire book that spun off of Feists work. I liked it alot, however that was more Feist's ideas then hers, which is why I am questioning this.

Well, to be honest I find Feist to be even less appealing than Wurts. :)

I know alot of people don't like him. He is pretty simple, but I like to read simple stories once in while. Fantasy shouldn't be to complex, takes the fun out of it. That's why I can't stand Jordon.

I'm assuming you mean Robert Jordan (if I'm wrong, my apologies), who I find completely lacking regarding any complexity :D. Being long-winded doesn't equate to complexity in my opinion.

I am speaking of him, yes. His plot is uncomplex, but his explainations are, very boring. I read up to book the before I realized that I didn't know what was going on and I didn't care.

If its any consolation, Feist and Wurts' Empire series far surpasses anything they've written on their own. It isn't brilliant, but at the very least its competent - ie not Erikson, Martin, Bakker level epic fantasy or even close, but roughly as good as efforts like Greg Keyes' Kingdom of Thorn and Bone.

kingdom of thorn and bone, i do love my fantasy though i am fairly limited to a few, to be fair, awful authors...

Please, tell me what you think if you have.
I'm sure I haven't, but since you made me click, can I tell you anyway?

How can you love your fantasy, if you are limited to a few awful authors?

Agreed

Empire trilogy is probably on my top 10 list.

I was trying to get through the light and shadow books, but I keep ending up putting them down and not getting back to them for a few years. I find the big wizards kinda lack description & personality for the most part, and sometimes the characters get a bit confusingly blah. Don't know how else to put it.
