Anyone a fan of anime?

I seem to have a somewhat perverse attraction to those impossibly big-eyed people in Japanese anime. So far, I only like a few well enough to watch them in Japanese with subtitles (Yu-Gi-Oh! and YuYu Hakusho), but I pick up Shonen Jump every month to get a fix. I found in the "English" versions of the television shows, a lot of backstory and content was removed, so I went back to the Japanese versions. Haven't quite figured out why they changed the storylines so drastically, but I have been picking up a little Japanese along the way. :D

Any other manga fans?

Cathy

I'm not a huge manga fan, but I have read the first seven volumes of video girl ai. I think it started out interesting, then got really dumb. as far as anime goes, neon genesis: evangelion and trigun are the two best series I've ever seen. I cried at the end of trigun, because it was such an awesome story; vash the stampede reminded me a lot of kwai chang caine.

I like Trigun and Kenshin. Would probably like more but I never see the guy I know who obtains them all.

I really like anime a lot!

Wabbit zooms away with a lot of speed lines and then cuts a building in half with his bare hands! :D

Wabbits have hands in anime? Too cool! Maybe penguins can fly too!

Cathy
Who hasn't had a penguin fix for FAR too long! :D

I like the Studio Ghibli stuff - Princess Mononoke, Spirited Away, Graveyard of the Fireflies (which is the closest any movie came to making me cry), and others. I got the Studio Ghibli boxed set. If you've never seen Ghibli movies, go get it pronto.

I liked Cowboy Bebop a lot, too.

The only manga I have is Dragonball Z.

I love anime but I haven't seen much of it apart from the full first series of Love Hina. I love anime for many reasons - the humour is very original compared to American shows, the art is beautiful, and they pay a lot of attention to plot and characterisation.

Watch Haibane Renmei, you blinkered fools! It must be done, for my will commands it. Why? It really is, hands down, the best anime series I have ever seen. Beautifully drawn, convincingly constructed plot, wonderful imagery and exploration of Judaeo-Christian themes and mythology, heavy on the symbolism, really a philosophical work of genius as much as anything else. In a similarly high-concept vein, Kino's Journey is also most worthy of praise, and the series I'm currently watching, Serial Experiments: Lain, also looks promising.

As far as films are concerned, there's no beating Studio Ghibli, though the Patlabor films still reserve a special place in my heart.

The patlabour movies were fantastic! :)

Anybody seen Hellsing? That's also fantastic!

I almost bought the DVD box set; I've read the manga (which is fabulously stylish and features some wonderful character design) and I love the opening theme, but have yet to see the anime. All in good time...

I like anime!

I haven't seen too many movie versions of anime--but the shows I've seen and liked are: Trigun, Cowboy BeBop, Hack Sign, Chobits, Fishugi Yugi, I My Me Strawberry Eggs (that one was kinda weird though), Excel Saga, and Ranma 1/2. I've seen Spirited Away, the Cowboy BeBop movie, Princess Mononoke, and...I can't remember any others right now.

I thought it was nice! I haven't watched any episodes in a while though--I may during break. It was actally one of the first animes I ever saw, so I never had anything to compare it to.

Anime refers to "cartoons" from Japan :)

However, unlike in the west these cartoons are not limited to or viewed as children's entertainment. It's a medium there rather than a genre. They have all kinds of shows and movies that are animated. There are pretty much every kinds movie/show you can thing of! Including and not limited to: cooking shows, romance, westerns, SF, fantasy, horror, DIY, porn, action, comedy, teen soaps, soap operas, and so on, and so on.

However the movies and TV shows that we get here are mostly aimed at the 18 - 30 audience so we get to see a lot of SF/fantasy and violent action type stuff.

Hope that explains it!
