I couldn't find a thread for August 2006 reads, so here we have it. Mine are:

The Booker Book-Simon Brett
The Information-Martin Amis
Things Fall apart-Chinua Achebe
Mother's Milk-Edward St. Aubyn
On Writing-Stephen King
Madame Bovary-Gustave Flaubert

Since August was an extremely slow reading month for me, this won't take long at all..

The Stars, The Earth, The River-Le Minh Khue

Twelve Sharp-Janet Evanovitch

Leaving a Trace-Alexandra Johnson

Carry Me Down, M.J. Hyland
Be Near Me, Andrew O'Hagan
The Vanishing, Tim Krabbé
Get A Life, Nadine Gordimer
In The Country Of Men, Hisham Matar
fullalove, Gordon Burn
The Bridge Of San Luis Rey, Thornton Wilder
The Fascination Of Evil, Florian Zeller
Time's Arrow, Martin Amis
On Writing, Stephen King

Abandoned: So Many Ways To Begin, Jon McGregor

Double Whammy - Carl Hiaasen Carl Hiaasen is great as always.
Shogun - James Clavell Decent, but not as good as I expected or hoped for.
Speaker for the Dead - Orson Scott Card Even better than Ender's Game.
Fight Club - Chuck Palahniuk Better movie than book. Not a big fan of his style.
Skin Tight - Carl Hiaasen Right there with Lucky You as the best of Hiaasen's books that I've read.
Inca Gold - Clive Cussler Same old Clive
An Iliad - Alessandro Baricco Very good retelling of the Homer classic.

Best of the month: An Iliad - Highly recommended.

August wasn't too bad a month for me. I finished:

Surfacing - Margaret Atwood (started in July)
The Good Women of China - Xinran
Eragon - Christopher Paolini
Animal Farm - George Orwell
A Room with a View - E.M. Forster
Keir Hardie and the Labour Party - Hyman Shapiro (a really short book that I had to read for my History class)

I also started Ecstacy by Irvine Welsh at the very end of the month and just finished it today. I quite enjoyed having a holiday to read in, but now that I'm back to school and my timetable begins to fill up with more classes of helping out with the younger students there will be less time for reading in school. :(

Phantom by Terry Goodkind: started it in July, finished it in August.

On to the rest of the list:

Baudolino by Umberto Eco
Liquor by Poppy Z. Brite (reread)
Prime by Poppy Z. Brite
Fool The World: An Oral History of a Band Called Pixies by Josh Frank and Caryn Ganz
Death of an Ordinary Man by Glen Duncan
The Dancing Girls of Lahore by Louise Brown

Enchanter's End Game - David & Leigh Eddings (started in July, finished in Aug. Reread.)
Eragon - Christopher Paolini
Eldest - Christopher Paolini
Book Lust - Nancy Pearl
The Bean Trees - Barbara Kingsolver (reread)
Skeleton Crew - Stephen King (reread)
Bag of Bones - Stephen King (reread)
The Clan of the Cave Bear - Jean M. Auel
The Valley of Horses - Jean M. Auel

Around the middle of the month my parents brought down all the old books that were boxed up in my old room (they want to refurbish the room of course) so I got caught up rereading some old favorites.

Captain Alatriste - Arturo Perez Reverte
The Flanders Panel - Arturo Perez Reverte
Purity of Blood - Arturo Perez Reverte
The Fencing Master - Arturo Perez Reverte
The Seville Communion - Arturo Perez Reverte
The Thirteenth Tale - Diane Setterfield

The Life of Pi - Yann Martel
Middlesex - Jeffrey Eugenides
One for the Money - Janet Evanovich
Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell - Susanna Clarke (finished in Sept)

Vanishing Acts, Jodi Picoult - I thought Lisa Tucker's "Once Upon a Day" covered the same ground, but better. It's too bad I read Tucker's first.

The Night Gardener, George Pelecanos - I keep wanting to love this author. This mystery was good, but not great.

Goodbye Lemon, Adam Davies - Great story of family, grief, forgiveness and redemption. I really liked this little book and will keep an eye out for future work by this author.

Snow Blind, P.J. Tracy - The Monkeewrench gang were scarce in this one, but then I think a little of them goes a long way. This author has a scary good imagination.

The Big Over Easy, Jasper Fforde - Detective Jack Spratt of the Nursery Crimes Division investigates the death of Humpty Dumpty. Did he fall, or was he pushed? I sooooo love this author.

The Boy Detective Fails, Joe Meno - It took work to finish this story, because it was told more in the abstract instead of straight narrative form. It was like reading a long comic book, only without pictures.

Copper River, Wm. Kent Krueger - A continuation of one of the best mystery series out there (IMO). This one introduces a new set of characters while nicely wrapping up the cliffhanger from his last book.

August was a very slow month for me because I was so busy with school - only two books:

Lord John and the Private Matter by Diana Gabaldon
The World According to Garp by John Irving

I can't wait for November and the end of school so that I can get some real reading time in!

Chainfire~Terry Goodkind
Phantom~Terry Goodkind
The Gunslinger~Stephen King
Passage~Connie Willis
Howl's Moving Castle~Diana Wynne Jones
The Other Boleyn Girl~Philippa Gregory (reread)

The best was The Other Boleyn Girl. It was just as good the second time around. Maybe better...:)

Schrodinger's Cat by Robert Anton Wilson 3.5/5
Walden by Henry David Thoreau 4.5/5
Batman: Night Cries Graphic Novel (Doesn't really count as a book read but I'm putting it here anyway.)
