The Fixer is a fictionalized version of the Beilis case but it deals more with what Yakov the prisoner went through while he was imprisoned before his trial.

Edward P. Jones's quote comes to mind:

"My soul's often wondered how I got through.... "

A very powerful book on a human being and how much one can endure or not when he is faced with torture,prejudice and hate.

I know you mean about Malamud's writing. He is a compelling and explicit author who has captivated me through his The Magic Barrel I did not read The Fixer, but I am familiar with Malamud and share your enjoyment with his work.
