Best Children's Book

Hey, what's the best Children's book that you can think of? And I'm speaking of any children's book (including Dr. Suess books, especially Cat in the Hat :D). Now I'll decide between three books (Cat in the Hat is just for fun).

  • Cat in the Hat by Dr. Suess
  • Pendragon series by D.J. MacHale (not sure of space inbetween Mac and Hale)
  • Percy Jackson and the Olympians by (forgot author and am not going to find the book or go search off the net)

I just have to say Cat in the Hat and you guys know why. I just can't decide between Pendragon or the Percy Jackson series.

For very young children:
Where the Wild Things Are
The Very Hungry Caterpillar
Jump Frog Jump
Stomp Stomp

Very young:
Agate by Joy Dey
Theodore Mouse Goes to Sea by Michaela Munteen

Check those two out. Agate is relatively new, and especially awesome.

If I had a kid, I would let him/her read Watership Down (Adams) and
The Wind in the Willows (Grahame). :) And probably Grimm Brothers fairy tales, so that subsequently they can be introduced to the works of Edgar Allan Poe. :devillook

I'm reading the Shadow Children series now...it's enjoyable, not sure if it hits the "best book ever" chord, but it's worth a look.

Anything by Roald Dahl... Dammit, someone's already said that. Peter Rabbit is beloved by many, and, uh, I always liked Where the Sidewalk Ends by Shel Silverstein.

I love Where the Sidewalk Ends too...but I've always sort of mentally compartmentalized that under poetry rather than a kids' story. It definitely fits and is awesome though.

I notice that a lot of children's books are poetry... maybe they aren't set up as a collective like Where the Sidewalk Ends, but take away all those lovely illustrations and you're left with a poem (for kids! :D).
I have to wonder if books like Cat in the Hat or (I don't know) Moose on the Loose would be nearly as popular if they didn't rhyme...

Also, Alligator Pie by Dennis Lee and The Paper Bag Princess by Robert Munsch.

Rhyming and books that are lyrical / rhythmical appeal to kids, that's why so many books for young readers are written like that.

No mention of The Hobbit by J.R.R.Tolkien? The Hobbit is one of the best books ever written for children. J.R.R.Tolkien wrote the book for his grandchildren only and it is one of the best. Rhyming poems, Riddles, Adventure, Humor everything is there in it, what else a kid expects from a book....!!!!

When I was growing up we had the My Book House Books by Olive Beaupre Miller. It is a 12 Volume set of Classic Nursery Rhymes, classic fairytales, stories from all over the world, and history. This set is what made me fall in love with reading. It began print in the 30s and ran into the 70s. The books are now out of print. However they can still be obtained through used booksellers and eBay.
