Best Cristmas Song

I can't understand how no one has nominated Silent Night. Best pop song ever written, I think. Sung by a choir. Sung by a children's choir! Not piped all over a shopping mall, but heard in someplace where you can hear yourself think. Somehow it seems to re-set all my synapses. And I'm not even a Christian.

Has anyone seen the movie of the making of that song? I've seen it twice -- it gets on TV around this time of year. An engaging little movie. Interesting on a number of levels. Sorry, can't remember its name.

A Christmas Gift For You by Phil Spector is the only christmas record an old rock'n'roller like me needs. Christmas (Baby Please Come Home) by Darlene Love is just beautiful. I play it over and over again until I cry.
Then I play Lonely This Christmas by Mud.

I also love Stop The Cavalry, I Believe In Father Christmas, and Do They Know It's Christmas? (The original not, version 3 by Band Aid 20....) Strangely these are not the most positive of songs.... Hmmm.

Yep, Jona Lewie's Stop the Cavalry is the one for me. Sorry if I spelt his name wrong.

*Rockin' Around the Christmas Tree - Brenda Lee
*God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen
*The Christmas Song - As Sung by Martina McBride

I love tons of others, but those are probably my three faves.

Mr Oblivion, you are indeed a sad, sad man.

My all time favourite Christmas song is _All I Want for Christmas is You_ by Mariah Carey! Woo Hoo!!!

Kidding.

It's actually _O Holy Night_.

ds

p.s. I have to look up this Fairytale of New York.

It's true. I love a good cry. Especially at Christmas when I think of all the iorphans and cruelly mistreated donkeys and the pussy cats and the North Pacific Tree Squid.

Well? Which one is it?

Mine is Chris Rhea - Driving Home For Christmas. I just love his voice, and that song gets me in the festive mood (not a euphemism, mind) every single time.

Cheers

Chris Rea is from Middlesbrough, the town next door to my home town. His parents used to run an ice cream parlour outside Albert Park but they went bankrupt (and Albert got sick of them following him around anyway). One of my drummers played on Chris Rea's first two albums and he said that Chris Rea was an absolute cnut.

I think Fairytale of New York and the Dreaming of a White Christmas are the only christmas songs I know (apart from Jingle Pants).

Oh Tannenbaum, Oh Tannenbaum
Wie grun sind deine blatter...

Thats all I can remember of it from learning it at Crimbo in a German lesson.

Then today is your lucky day. The lyrics arrived in an email today:

O Tannenbaum, o Tannenbaum,
wie treu sind deine Blätter!
Du grünst nicht nur
zur Sommerzeit,
Nein auch im Winter, wenn es schneit.
O Tannenbaum, o Tannenbaum,
wie treu sind deine Blätter!

O Tannenbaum, o Tannenbaum!
Du kannst mir sehr gefallen!
Wie oft hat nicht zur Weihnachtszeit
Ein Baum von dir mich hoch erfreut!
O Tannenbaum, o Tannenbaum!
Du kannst mir sehr gefallen!

O Tannenbaum, o Tannenbaum!
Dein Kleid will mich
was lehren:
Die Hoffnung und Beständigkeit
Gibt Trost und Kraft
zu jeder Zeit.
O Tannenbaum, o Tannenbaum!
Das soll dein Kleid
mich lehren.

:D Had a lovely sing-along to myself. Don't think my house is appreciating it as much (although it is probably a pleasant change from Jingle Bells - which reminds me, I must dig out my singing slippers)

Yes. They're sky blue, and have Tiggers on the front. When you press them they sing Christmas carols :D

Which carols? Let me guess *looks in magic crystal ball* Jingle Bells, Deck the Halls, We Wish You a Merry Christmas?

I don't have any slippers that sing. :( But I have knickers that hum.

I couldn't find a cute picture of a kitty to post, so instead I offer one of my favorites ; Emerson, Lake and Palmer's I Believe in Father Christmas.
