Our newest Top 10 project is the Best SF&F TV Shows. If you would like to help out by submitting your list, your opinion is both welcome and appreciated. Lists can also be submitted by email form. If you do submit a list, please post it here too, as a reply to this topic, so that we can all see and discuss your picks.

While we're collecting lists, I'm also interested in your candid opinions:

So what do you think? What are the best SF&F TV Shows? Which are the most engaging? Memorable? What makes a great scifi or fantasy TV Show?

I think "Xena: Warrior Princess" is an excellent fantasy/sci-fi TV show. I loved the show's quirky sense of humor, the surprisingly elaborate sets and costumes, the writers' creative take on important historical events, and it helped to have an actress as gorgeous and talented as Lucy Lawless in the main role. People can dismiss it as low-budget, campy fluff if they choose to, but they're missing out on a unique and fun series.

Also can't forget "The X-Files". I liked how Mulder and Scully would investigate government conspiracies one week and vengeful ghosts the next. In addition to having science fiction trappings, there were also elements of mystery and horror. I also liked the spooky tone/atmosphere that made the series so distinctive.

I love lots.

Battlestar Galactica (New version)
Stargate SG1
Stargate Atlantis
Star Trek NG
Star Trek Voyager
Star Trek DS9
Firefly

I'll write more later. Just wnted to suscribe to this thread and keep the ball rolling

Star Trek Original series
Star Trek Deep Space Nine
Buffy
Angel
Smallville
Battlrstar Galactica (both versions)
Star Trek Voyager
Star Trek Enterprise
Batman (Adam West)
Superman (George Reeves)
Tru Calling
Ghost Whisperer
First Wave
Twilight Zone
Wonder Woman
Lost in Space
Babylon 5
Doctor Who
Star Trek Next Generation

Of these, top 5 would be Trek TOS, DS9, Buffy, Babylon 5, and Tru Calling

My votes would be for Smallville and The X-Files (and possibly Lost, does it count as SF or F?). I need a while to think of ten.

My top 5 are probably:

The X Files
Babylon 5
Star Trek: The Next Generation
Smallville
Firefly

Buffy wasn't bad at first, but got far too repetitive so I didn't watch much after the first two seasons. I am currently watching Torchwood, although it is a little weird at times.

Okay - I forgot Red Dwarf, I love that series :D

Ok, I got carried away. You want just 10. Here is my list;

Star Trek, original series
Deep Space Nine
Buffy
Angel
Twilight Zone
Babylon 5
Voyager
Battlestar Gallactica original
Battlestar Gallactica new
Trek Next Generation

My all time favorite SF&F show was Quatntam Leap with Scott Bakula. I love that show. After that it would be:

Smallville and Charmed does that count?

I don't watch much sci-fi/fantasy tv, but from what I do watch (other than kids shows) I would have to rank Charmed, Xena, Red Dwarf, and The 10th Kingdom in my favourites. Plus I think Lost deserves a mention too as it is addictive. :p

For the other five in my list I would have to say... Outlaw Star (since it's also one of my favourite animes), Sabrina, the Teenage Witch (because I loved it growing up), The Munsters (I'm assuming that would be classed as fantasy), Fruits Basket (another great anime), and Bewitched (hopefully that counts too). :)

Buffy and Angel were excellent.
Love DS9 and X-Files (even though some of the voice-over Mulder/ Scully monologues in the latter were ridiculous!)
As Peronel asked - does LOST count as fantasy? It's pretty good.

I keep meaning to watch Xena because it's meant to be great.

Star Trek, Original Series
Star Trek, TNG
Lost
Quantum Leap
Hercules Legendary Journey

3. Xena
2. Buffy
1. X-Files

  • X files before it got strangled by its convuluted continuity (rewatching this at the mo- in the middle of season 3. Squeeze from season 1 still creeps me out)
  • Firefly
  • Babylon 5 (up to season 4)
  • Star Trek DS9
  • Doctor Who (old and new)
  • Farscape
  • Twilight Zone
  • Red Dwarf
  • Spaced
  • Ultraviolet
  • Buffy/Angel (before season 6 of Buffy and season 4 of Angel)
I guess sliders, early quantum leap, varoius episodes of BSG (when it's not waffling on about pretentious pseudo-religious babble from the cylons) and dark skies are bubbling under.

Now shows to be disillusioned with - Heroes, Lost, Alias. No long term plan. The studio execs just seem to drag these out as long as they can get viewers (yes it's true with the X-files but that show did have a lot of good one off classic episodes despite this).
