Book about the future

I am looking for a book that I read when I was in middle school or early high school. I only have very vague clues but I hope someone will know what I am talking about.

It was written in the 50's or 60's I think. It was written as sort of a warning about technology. Man vs. Machine. The author described a future where we would all do nothing for ourselves and watch "holograms" all day long (digital cable???) and the main character's wife was pretty much on constant meds and never took out her earphones. He referred to them as "shells" I think and they were cordless. Everyone wore them all the time - walking around town, grocery shopping, at home. Now that the Ipod craze has hit hard - it totally reminded me of this book. When we read it in the early early 90's most of us still did not have home computers. And still, we thought it was spooky because the author had written about so many things that had indeed been invented and that we had indeed become quite dependent on. I want to read it again and see what else has come true.

Ring any bells or do I just sound totally crazy?

It does sound vaguely familiar, but I'm afraid I don't know the title. However, someone here will, I'm sure. :)

Thanks - If it helps at all, right around the time that we read the aforementioned book, our teacher also had us reading "By the Waters of Babylon". Think Teach was trying to tell us something?

If I remember correctly, this sounds like Ray Bradbury's Farenheidt 451; is the book you're looking for about a world in which books are no longer read?

That's what came to my mind when reading the description also.
