Book recommendations for a preteen?

err...10year old? guy?

im 13, so..err..yah. i was the same way. i always got bored with books because they were of a too low level for me

charlie bone- harry potter's awsome evil (not really) twin
gregor the overlander
artemis fowl- one of the best reverse-hero books of all time
half moon investigations
diary of a wimpy kid- not really a book, more of a stick-figure assisted hilarious journal

also, he may (probably not) like manga, like dragon drive. its clean, even to american standards. but, i should warn you that there are many manga that are older teen but are not rated as such, because b japanese standards their clean.

well you know vampirates is advanced with more difficult plots but storyline is the best storyline ive seen in a childrens book

When I was a couple years younger I loved:

Among the Hidden its around a 6 book series (kids love series' by the way, I hated anything that wasn't one) It's really good my #1 recommendation

The series of unfortunate events is also a very good one, Loved it, around 12 book series i believe.

harry potter, Artemis Fowl, bartimis trilogy( spelled that wrong), Lost years of Merlin( first few chapters might be a pain but great after that), Del Tora Quest, Where the Red Fern Grows(guys will like this book a ton, girls too), Everworld( first series i read as a young teen, pretty good)

That's about all I remember. Can't go wrong with any of those.

Recently my kids and I read The Old Country by Mordicai Gerstein.
144 pages - brief. Recommendable for grades 3 to 6th. I liked the story.

Also, recommendable: The Invention of Hugo Cabret, by Selznick
It it thick - 544 pages, but every other pages are full page illustrations.
It is one of editors' and customers' pick of 07 for Amazon.com.

My son has turned into an avid reader and I'm having a hard time keeping up with him! He's read everything in the house that he's found interesting and just finished the last book I bought him in a week

So, I was curious if any of you could recommend books that would interest him. I want something clean because he's 10. The problem we're running into is that his reading level is higher than books targeted for him, but I don't want him to read some of the YA fiction that's out because I don't think he's that mature yet.

Books that he has loved and sucked up in a few days are

Leven Thumps
Fabelhaven
Freddy series (I, Freddy, The Haunting of Freddy...)
Judy Blume
Flush

Right now he is reading the first Maximum Ride book and he's loving it.

Books that he started but didn't finish-
Watership Down...it was more that I bought another book that he was more interested in
Princess Bride
The Golden Compass (he said it was boring)
He claims that he's not interested in Brian Jacques, but he hasn't given them a try yet

So, now that you have a little background, I'd appreciate suggestions :)

My kids and I loved Fablehaven, my wife loves Leven Thumps, (I'm not as big on it as Fablehaven). Might I suggest some of my kids favorites, I have a 12 yr old, so interests may be similar. Harry Potter, of course, The Hobbit, Midnight for Charlie Bone, My side of the Mountain, Hatchet.
I loved The Outsiders when I was 11, but perhaps I was weird.

I didn't read too much when I was 10, but I remember when I was 11 that I REALLY like The Giver by Lowery. That was a great book!

I really recommend the Charlie Bone series by Jenny Nimmo. She is an awesome author and her books are targeted at preteens. So far she has a seven book series. Here's a list of the Charlie Bone books. It's a fantasy series about a boy who goes to a school for gifted and "endowed" children. Very fun read.

the cirque du freak series by Darren Shan if he likes vampires
midnight magic by avi is really good
the midnighters by scott Westerfield...one of my favorite series..its about kids who were born exactly at midnight and can enter the 25th hour while time freezes for everyone else.
the vampirates series by Justin Somper...about Vampire Pirates
howls moving castle, Castle in the air, house of many ways by Dianna Wynne Jones are really good books about wizards
Coraline by Neil Gaiman...kind of creepy but a good read.
Most books by Tamora Pierce...awsome writer

I've heard that Terry Pratchett's "Johnny Maxwell" series makes good reading for preteens. As for me, I loved Roald Dahl books.

I would recommend continuing with the Maximum Ride series, I usually don't like YA novels but I love this series.
Would also recommend the Red Wall books, I read the series when I was in 4th grade.
And also a book I forgot about but saw LawnTamer post it, My Side of The Mountain. I also read that when I was in elementary school as part of a reading assignment and loved it.

These were some of my favorite books when I was about nine or eleven. Back then I was reading a lot of books that were not meant for my age but these are the ones that I think are age-appropriate:

Pappa Pellerin's Daughter, by Maria Gripe (and also the Elvis Karlsson books)
Tove Jansson's Moomin novels
The Neverending Story, Momo and the Jim Button books by Michael Ende
anything by Jules Verne
Little Women
Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn
The Happy Hollisters series
anything by Enid Blyton
