Booker Prize

This years Booker Prize winner was, for those who don't know already... D.B.C Pierre's Vernon God Little.

Not habing read it myself, I'd love to hear what other people thought of it.

It’s a good book, certainly worth a look. I found it a little one paced at times, but it always picks up again. The ending is good, though not exactly an original idea, I have read a couple of books with similar endings. This sort of ending gets a bit tedious after a while, though in Pierre’s favour, he does throw in a great twist that had me fooled. You will know what I mean once you get there! When I read it I never got the impression it was going to be good enough to win the Booker Prize, but then I had not read the other books on the shortlist. I have since read Oryx & Crake, and did not think much of it…… I doubt I will be reading any of the other four from this year’s shortlist.

Many thanks for your thoughts, I might have to have a look at it when I get down my current pile of books.

I have since read Oryx & Crake, and did not think much of it……
Ali, perhaps you could elaborate or post a short review for our library. There's only 1 review for Oryx and Crake at the moment (mine - and I loved it!).

It would help give a more balanced opinion of the book for people interested in it.

I am not very good at writing reviews at the best of times Ell, even worse at it when trying to be critical. If I read something that I really enjoyed, I will try and leave a review. I find them easier to write then!

I own a signed first edition of DBC Pierres Vernon God Little. It has page numbers missing not pages just the numbers. Will this make it more or less valuable ?

I saw Vernon God Little is out in the 3 for 2 at Waterstones now, i may pick it up at next visit :)

I liked Vernon God Little in parts, although parts annoyed/bored me. Overall a good book though.

I hated it. I mean really really hated it.

Doesn't live up to its blurb let alone the prize it recieved. Vastly over-rated and quite obviously written for booker prize judges.

I've read a lot of online reviews of this book and there are a surprising amount of negative comments.

The 2002 winner Life of Pi is one of my favorite books. Infact if I was put on the spot and asked to name my favorite book ever (a very difficult question to answer), Life of Pi is probably the book that would pop into my head first. VGL is not in the same game let alone the same league.

How this won the Booker prize when The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time wasn't even considered is unforgivable.

I tried to read Vernon God Little some days ago, but couldn't stand it at all. I made it to page 40 or something but dumped it quickley.

I think "Vernon God Little" was an OK-read, I would never recommend it to anyone though. Some parts were good, as an other member pointed out, while others were b-o-r-i-n-g.
I've read "Brick Lane" too, didn't like it much either.
Tried a few pages of "Notes on a scandal" by Heller, but gave up.

i think u should persevere a LITTLKE more if u can handle it mz giz.
i didnt like it v much to begin and only cont cos it was bought for me as a present

it gets much better as it develops and the plot moves on imo.
it was funny - i only really started to enjoy it as things came together at the end
tho u right its not that good

I'm about halfway through the book, and to be honest I'm not entirely convinced it's as good as it's made out to be. Granted, it has moments where the author's sense of humour shines through, but it all just seems a tad surreal (though I guess that's intentional). The way it's written shows echoes of Catcher in the Rye in the way the protagonist sees the world.

I'm persevering with the book as it's not bad, but hopefully this supposed 'brilliance' will hit me near the end of the book.
