Books and CD prices

Think about being in the musicians shoes, or the authors shoes. You've done the creative side of the equation, and managed to get yourself recorded/published. Then you go on an internet forum and find people are stealing your work because they just refuse to pay for it.

First of all, those who work hard and get hardly published, those who are "new", their books will be in general cheap. (I do not mean Harry Potter).

And those beginning bands and musicians, they have cheap CDs if at all. I frequently go to see young Punk bands, young Jazz musicians and whatever. Entrance is cheap and musicians are rather talanted. I do not mind buying THEIR CDs.
But big bands? They could make their CDs cheaper! They have most of controll to do that, so I do believe! That could prevent the piracy!

You are so naive...who do you think sets the prices? The Rolling Stones or the label who produces their music? Again, it's supply and demand. There's no demand for the crappy punk bands you listen to...so the price has to be low to get people to buy it.

Would you buy a car if you knew it was stolen?
Clearly NOT. Cars are different. And there is a range of prices for cars. One can buy CHEAP cars. But CDs, DVDs and books? There is not enough competition (between the publishers or whom? Who is responsible here for the prices???)

I just say, those high prices are the result of some kind of monopoly. I am fighting it they way I can, and not staying passive, like all you do!

This is exactly what I say. Prices CAN BE cheaper. If some " crappy punk bands" can live from their shows and CDs (and they can), others can too. Besides it seems that they only loose from holding prices high.
Most of teenages, who are probably the greatest consumors for all that pop-music, would buy MORE. Meanwhile I see them sitting on the internet searching for the music they like. To download. Go ahead and explain them why they should not. And try to explain them also why their parents are not willing to give them 15$ for each CD they want to buy!

I still claim that there is an unnecessary monopoly for those prices.

Ying Yang, Ying Yang. OK, I am stealing. And you are passively watching as we all here got robbed and doing nothig! Washing your hands?

My first encounter with pirated tapes was back in the mid 70's at a flea market. This was in a old store, and booth holders paid rent and were often the same people week after week. There was this one place at the back of the building that was huge..loaded with boxes and boxes of musical tapes(video was a pipe dream then). I'd never heard of record pirating, but it seemed odd to me that all these tapes had cheap looking labels and weren't shrink wrapped. The prices were dirt cheap too. The whole booth had a dirty, sleezy feel to it, and I never bought anything from them. Then I bought a brand new LP( atTG&Y) and noticed the record sleeve had a notice written. It was warning the consumers about record pirating and was an attempt by the record label to educate the public about the harm this crime was doing to the record industry and everyone else. This explained what was going on in that sleezy booth at the flea market. I was glad I walked away from there without giving them my business.

Just because you can write a book on your computer "word" program and print it out on your printer, on your paper, and sell it at a profit for $2.00 a book does not mean that a publishing house can do the same thing for Stephen King.

Creating your own music CD is easy. Selling it at local gigs is easy. Worldwide marketing, advertising and mass production is not so simple, and the bottom line still comes back to supply and demand.

The prices will fall when people stop buying. A bunch of spoiled punks like you stealing will not effect prices other than possibly raising them to cover losses.

You are a thief.

OK, OK, I am a thief. Sounds romantic. Somebody has to leave on a theft to bring the justice to the world.

At least I am doing something. And you are only having all those righteous ideas, which is a very nice and comfortable position. Or they are robbing us? And they are stronger? Let be on the safer side . EEEEK

Whatever happened to saving ones hard-earned cash (or allowance) to buy such CDs and DVDs. Or working. If you can't afford luxuries like CDs and DVDs (yes, they are luxuries... radio is free if you've got a radio), you shouldn't find the need to buy them. I don't drive a fancy BMW, because I can't afford a fancy BMW; yet I'm not going out to steal one this afternoon because the car industry monopoly sets their prices too high. Why not join the rest of the world and sign up for five or six credit cards and not pay for your CDs and DVDs that way?

between LP and TG&Y you just lost a lot of folks. :D

LOL- I thought about posting a legend at the bottom of my post:

LP= old fashioned vinyl disc used by the ancients to play music on a record player. Called LP, short for Long Playing, as opposed to a 45rpm record, which just had two songs, one on each side...(I have boxes and boxes of both)

TG&Y= Toys, Girdles, and Yo-yo's..nah, just pulling your chains;) It was a retail department store, sorta like Wal-mart, but nowhere near as big. Another chain laid low by Sam Walton.

But you do drive the other car, don't you? Car is not a luxury. Culture SHOULD NOT be luxory either. You go and buy yourseld a cheaper car, don't you? Well, this is because the market ALLOWS you to have cheap AND expensive cars.

I do not mind to have CHEAP and EXPENSIVE editions of the same book, or the same CD. But they do not do that! What is my alternative? (To stay a barbarian, start drinking vodka and forget about music or reading. You can not afford it - well, too bad for you ! He-he-he from our lovely capitalistic brother)

That's a load of horse do. No one is forcing anyone to do without culture. Discount stores both in real time and online specialize in used books, music, and movies. No one in any place on the planet has the right to steal what someone else has, just because the cost is too high. We are not talking about BASIC human NEEDS here, are we. I love books, music, and movies as much as the next person. But they are NOT crucial to my survival. I can use the library in times of no extra money. I can use my brain and locate bargains that do not steal from the artist or any merchant. The choice is there, baby.

Since the post has degenerated into a "so's your mom" match, I don't feel too bad about further derailment.
When my oldest was in first grade he came home telling us about these "giant black CDs" that his music teacher had. It was time for a history lesson.

With that I do not argue. Library I do love too. Are there any libraries for CDs?
By the way, I do think that Culture is OUR BASIC NEED. I do not want to live in a place without a culture. Sorry, but that scares me.
