Books you didn't finish

A book I'm having trouble finishing right now is Half of a Yellow Sun. The narrative is dragging along and it just misses that page-turner effect. I'm also a fan of a linear narrative rather than one that jumps backwards and forwards

I applaud you on getting halfway through the book. i didnt even get 50 pages in. it was the same as with you. I wanted to finish the book because the topics were so interesting to me. As much at the topics interested me the author couldnt keep my interest.
 
Falling Man, by Don Delillo. I got about 2/3 of the way through I think. It was awful.

A Tale of Two Cities, by Dickens. I didn't finish the last 90 pages. I felt awful about it but I just couldn't finish it.

The Wind Done Gone, by Alice Randall. I love Gone with the Wind but this was just horrible. I only got about 30 pages into it.

Have you tried the audio book? I really liked the book but I have the audio book as well and my husband preferred that, after not getting into reading it.
 
Virgin Suicides by Jefferey Eugenides. I enjoyed Middlesex, and picked up the sorry, sad, and depressing book about that suicides. :( Didn't finish.

Wow - I loved A Short History of Nearly Everything. Not only was the subject matter interesting, but Bill Bryson has such a great writing style. I could read anything he wrote! :D

I love Bill Bryson too, I've read a few books by him now, A Short History of Nearly Everything is still my fave and I have more waiting on my TBR shelf :)

I agree. It was a very easy and informative read.
 
Trainspotting... Every time I start it I just can't get myself to finish it. I saw the movie though? Perhaps that has to do with it? Or maybe it is the style of writing since it goes along with the accent/dialect?
 
I have a bit of a problem, in that I cannot abandon a book however much I may be hating it. However, if I did, I would have abandoned The Devil's Advocate, by Andrew Neiderman. Also, Mourning Ruby, by Helen Dunmore, which was dreadfully tedious.
 
BooKs that I have not finished

I didn't finish Sophie's World-very boring, yet know nothing about philosophy so think I should start up again-I just checked, I'm at page 346, so did persevere!

Another two which I didn't finish was Love In the Time of Cholera and Madame Bovary but as we are reading that this month maybe I should get back to it.

There always seems to be books that I must read for my bookgroup or return to a friend so leave difficult works for those reasons.

Captain Corelli's Mandolin. Stayed the 100 pages but found it waffling and I couldn't connect with any of the characters.

I gave up on that one too. I thought the opening scene with the pea in the ear was pretty good but it went down hill quickly from there.

I've always had troubles with this one too - it's definitely the accent that makes me give up on it.
 
Extreme Measures, by Vince Flynn. He was great in the beginning. But two books prior to EM his quality began to decline and his characters in EM were very cardboard and clichéd. I didn't even get to halfway through the book before I threw it aside and took it back to the library
 
Started reading Henry James's The Spoils of Poynton, but got quickly bored with it. Found it hard work and uninteresting. soon gave it up. I have read The Turn of the Screw, several times and loved it. But this one did nothing for me.
 
The Interpretation of Dreams by Freud. I'm really interested in dreams but the book is just so dry and theoretical..
