I recently got handed 'The Rising' by Brian Keene. I'm a little ashamed to say I've never read his stuff before (I'm a self-proclaimed zombie freak, so...) and I thumbed through it... and what got me was the splatter. He seems, at a glance, to be all about the shock factor...

Anyway, my question specifically is; is he worth reading, or is it just another blood show? I like plot more than gore (although gore's never NOT appreciated) and I'm worried that this will be another case of mediocre writing dressed up in lots of shock value. I've got a BIG list of books to read, and I'd rather not waste my time with a book that's not going to have a plot worth following. Thought I'd ask everyone's opinion, assuming anyone's read anything by him.

I've really been meaning to get my hands on The Rising, but my library doesn't have it.

I'm going to go get it soon once I have some money. So I hope he is good.

Its been a long time since I read The Rising and City of the Dead. I can't remember much of the writing or plot but do remember them being more of a fun b-movie type of book. The zombies aren't exactly your standard zombies. They are possessed by critters from another dimension trying to take over ours. They are intelligent and make smart assed remarks while trying to eat your face. I prefer your standard slow moving stupid zombies but I still enjoyed these books.

I did recently read Urban Gothic by Keene and it is a shock gore book but was still a fun but stupid read.

Brian Keene is one my best author. i like some of his books like Urban Gothic and Darkness On the Edge of Town. those books are my favorite books and i usually read that books in every weekends.

I read Dark Hollow earlier this year and found it quite enjoyable. Reminded me of Richard Laymon's stuff a little.
