C.J. Sansom: Dark Fire

Anyone ever read this book?

When I read this book I was completely into Sci-fi so I wanted to try something new so I picked up this book. It was actually as thrilling as it says it was supposed to be and I couldn't stop turning the pages. This book got me interested in crime fiction which was nice because it was a big change from what I had already been reading.

What's funny though is that I had bought the book that takes place before that, but never got around to reading it.

Good call Fennicy there.! And have you read his FIRST book in the Matthew Shardlake series...DISOLUTION his second being Dark Fire and his third SOVEREIGN and.... The eagerly-anticipated fourth Shardlake novel...R E V E L A T I O N

And IF your up for it, how about Jim McGee's Hawkwood series that's set in the Napoleon been era, there's been three as in..: his FIRST Ratcatcher, 2)Resurrectionist, 3)Rapscallion.
Have look at HaperCollins site on httpwwwcollinscrime.co.uk/authors/default.aspx?id=7081

OH! and go even further back, in time, to 4th Century England with Michael
Jecks brill Medieval Murder Mysteries... httpwwwmichaeljecks.co.uk/

I loved Dissolution because it was such a surprise. Dark Fire was good too but had less impact for me.

I used to read historical novels about Henry VIII as a young teenager, and this was fascinating because it was about the effects of what he did, rather than harping on forever about wives and court intrigue. Very interesting and atmospheric.

I've just come across a recommendation for these books, and was wondering whether to get them. Judging from this thread, it seems as though I should. I used to read a lot of Tudor-based novels when I was a kid (a bit like Cooroo by the sound of it), and this series sounds really promising.

Well I just started rereading this...

I just started Dissolution today. I like that Matthew has young Mark with him to ask questions about what's going on with Cromwell and the monasteries. The info dump doesn't seem so much like an info dump. :)

I'm partial to imperfect heroes. One of my favorite books is Heart of the Country, a western historical by Greg Matthews. The hero of that book is a misogynistic hunchback. And Glokta (badly crippled from torture) was a favorite in Joe Abercrombie's First Law books. Tall dark and handsome heroes are boring. Everything comes too easy for them.
