can you loose your relation to reality, because of reading?

I don't think that reading can distort your realtion to reality alone, it would take a lot of different factors. Living alone and never coming out of the house, never talking to anyone and doing nothing but reading, then your sense of reality might be somewhat distorted.

Strangely enough, I met people who think reading is a waste of time that gives you a distorted view on reality, that life is harsh reality and people who read might seek refuge from stress and worries in an imaginary world.
Everyone needs some way to seek refuge from stress and worries. People who say that reading is a waste of time just have a different way of doing so.

What do you think about such ideas? reading is pure pleasure and it can help you understand things better

Books are distorted reality, people then distort reality, it repeats like this, on and on and on.......... then who can tell which is more realistic, individual's own perception of reality or the so-called storylines in books?

Stand in front of a semi, and read a book.......the winner will prevail :)

What do you think about such ideas? reading is pure pleasure and it can help you understand things better.

Everyone has their own way of seeking refuge, I'm not sure why reading a book would be any different than a video game, television, movie, or fasad.

On the other hand, I'm don't know how people can just stay tucked away inside their house. I'm DYING here counting down the days until this horrific season we call winter passes, and the outdoors comes back to life!

When I read, it's always ME reading a book.....I react to the book. I'm certain I've never actually thought I had become part of the story or any of it's characters. Hrm....maybe I need drugs to help me along.... ;)

Oh... then i would say: Crystal saw herself standing infront of a semi to test which was reality, wondering whether she would enter into the fourth dimension where the creature might have 5 or even 7 sex/gender.

and by the way, I am not sure what does semi mean. in which novel, or who is the author that talk about this semi thing? :p

A semi is a big long-haul tractor-trailer truck.

I am clinically depressed and have been off my medication for just over one year (HOORAY for me!!) and I find that reading helps keep me level. I don't know why, I just know that it happens.

So, lose my relation to reality through reading? No, reading keeps me in reality.

congratulations!! :D
if i think about it, you're right, I mean if you only read one genre you start to believe every crap, but if you read all different kinds, books can take you to the stars, to the middle of the earth, or just to another town, you always wanted to visit, but never had the money or the time or the right person to go with!!
:)

I agree with Ashlea that reading one genre can definitely impact one's perception of reality. I do, however, sometimes finding myself saying similar things in similar patterns to those in whatever book I'm reading. Not always, but every once in a while.

The characters do stick in my head, even when I'm not reading...yes reality is there, but I have an excellent ability to block it out when I need to. I usually just lay back for 15 or so minutes at night and daydream to relax my mind from whatever pressures I'm facing....books can sometimes help this process.

I would never do such a thing :p

....and I would certainly not put our little crystal in such danger

do you mean losing relation to reality in a "oops its 8 am already?" kind of way, which happens to me a lot, or do you mean like that time i hitchhiked all the way to new orleans looking for lestat so he would make a vampire -you know you cant count on louis, he is such a wuzz (sadly all i got was a restraining order that prevents me to go closer than 50 yards of anne rice).

other interesting thing its how erroneous facts mentioned in books, can become common knowlege after sometime (like thinking that everybody believed the earth was flat back in the midle ages)

Thank you, honeydevil, and you are absolutely right. I have been to the Arctic Circle, a distant planet, San Francisco, the top of Mount Everest, the Dreaming, the future and the past, all thanks to books. They have taken me there and I have never left the comfort of my favorite chair.

If anyone ever ACTUALLY lost reality, they would physically act upon that which they were experiencing......unless anyone has physically jumped up and ran away because they were scared, or ran to save a character they thought was real, I would say that you were still aware that you were reading a ficticious story.

I agree. I think it all depends on what you read, how you interpret it, and how much of a certain genre you read. If you only read Anne Rice, you might actually start to believe Lestat is writing the books and move to New Orleans in search of his house. I've dreamt that I was out of reality, in the current book I was reading, but, unfortunately, I always return to reality sooner or later.
lol I had that problem when I first started reading her books...I would put the book down and expect Lestat to hear my thoughts.

lol I guess her books have the same effect on a lot of people.
