Children's horror

Does anyone remember reading horror when they were a kid? We've talked about RL Stine, but how about The Grimm Brothers, ummm, etc

I remember reading a lot of Paul Jennings when I was eight or nine (and ten and eleven and twelve). His 'Un-' series were great, but there was one book called 'Quirky Tales' that scared the hell out of me. Two stories that stood out for me were 'A Dozen Bloomin' Roses' and 'Unhappily Ever After'.

Oh yeah, I went through a phase when children's/YA horror was a huge deal with me. I read stuff like Scary Stories to tell in the Dark, and Strange Tales (something like that... can't remember exact title) and then moved on to Christopher Pike and a little of RL Stine. I also read the Witch series by Phyllis Reynolds Naylor and LOVED it (but then, everything she wrote is good).

And the illustrations. They'll give you nightmares.


The one I remember distinctively is the woman with spiders bubbling out of her flesh...

I sure do remember the "Horror" books I read when I was a kid. Grimms Fairy Tales was one of my favorites and I just recently bought a copy for "old times sake". Tales From The Crypt was my favorite comic book. Then I went on to Frankenstein's stories and Dracula.

I remember my uncle seeing me read The Red Pony by John Steinbeck and told my grandmother I shouldn't be reading it, not good for children.

Yea I read a lot of R.L. Stine. I actually still have them. I figure I will save them for my daughter when she gets a little older.

I had forgotten about that spider story! Scary stories - terrifying illustrations - I shall have to pick those books up.

Scary Stories scard the sh*t out of me when I was little. I was horrified to look at the pictures. I have the collection I got a year ago (read it all last halloween) and too bad my sister is making us giving it away because of so little shelf space. But I know I won't be reading it again for like...years because it's just the type of book you can't read too often or it will get boring.
