I read the book quite a long time ago. Couldn't put it down, but it made me wonder why I would want to read about a life like that. I guess as a reader you're always something of a voyeur as well.

Haven't seen the picture, though.

The book came before the film - actually, if I recall correctly, a series of articles came before the book, and then the film was based on that. It's been years since I read it, but I think my reaction was pretty much the same as chuephödli's; a very uncomfortable but engrossing read. The film was OK, I suppose, but lacked the detail of the book (though again, it's been a LONG time since I saw it).

I read the book several times, many years ago - like chuephödli says, it was quite un-put-downable. I've never seen the film though.
