curiosity about memories

Out of curiosity: Why we have memories?

1) If there is a kinda liquid that when you take it, would erase all your memorise, with out any memories at all, will you drink it? Why and why not?

And 2) if there is another kinda liquid that if you take it would only erase your unpleasant memories, would you like to drink it? But why you want to erase those unpleasant memories? Those pleasant memorise is belong to the past? Why you prefer to keep them?

like to share your opinion? :)

1) No. I wouldn't remember where I live, and I have a lot of biscuits that need eating. And if I was already at home, I wouldn't remember that I had biscuits, or where I'd put them.

2) Without memories of bad events I wouldn't be in the possession of the learning that went along with them. I would be doomed to repeat these episodes in my life over and over again. I would not remember how bad it made me feel to give all my biscuits out to strangers, and soon I would have no biscuits left at all.

You should watch Memento if you haven't already. I don't want to end up as a tattooed loon.

But DO NOT watch Momento drunk.
Or in reverse. They put an option on the DVD to watch it the right way round. What an ingenious idea. One simple step to make one of the most original, intelligent and all-round brilliant films of recent years into a big steaming pile of poo. Hurrah!

Really?! In reverse??! Didn't know that. That does kinda spoil the whole idea.

I saw it on video, as it came out before I came into possession of a DVD player. But a little chum of mine said that he saw it on DVD and one of the options was to watch the whole thing in the reverse order. He said it was somewhat pants.

But then, maybe it would be a bit like Columbo, where you get the revelation at the beginning.

You get my age, and you have lots of memories, not all of them pleasant. Some of them still bring such pain that they cannot be faced head on, only glanced at from a sharp angle. However, like the ever-increasing number of gray hairs on my head, they are evidence of my experiences. I have become whatever it is I am as a sum total of all those experiences -- the good, the bad, the mundane, the glorious, and the excruciating. But memories are tricky devils: forget them too easily and you may find yourself reliving them; dwell too much in them and you forget to live altogether.

don't start all that again - Wabbit will be here soon telling you why the Netherlands is a much better place to live than the UK! :D

Nooooooooooooooooo - No hijacking this thread for another 'I hate my country' speech PLEASE!

Ashlea I haven't seen that film, but I'm not really a film person so it's no surprise - I only saw Momento by accident.

I don't really hate my country.

And Memento is one the the five best films ever.

So there.

Cheers

I know there must be a great cosmic imbalance when I find myself agreeing with Martin. Perhaps it's time to increase my medication.

1) no way would i erase all my memories. i would be interested to meet someone who would do such a thing and find out why they would. i suppose i could speculate and come up with a few types of people that might do such a thing, and in which case it may be understandable

2) are we talking ALL unpleasant memories, or selective ones? i appreciate many of my unpleasant memories as contributing to what i know now and who i am. but i can think of one recent memory i would erase because it doesn't have any bearing on my life, really. i wouldn't miss the memory for any reason.

The reason we held those pleasant memories might because we believed that "this happy moment only exists here and now", thatwe could not sure we would have it again.

emm........................................................

We need memories in order to survive. If you eat something and it makes you sick you need to remember not to eat it again else you'll die. The good memories reinforce actions which make us happy and healthy and the bad memories help us to avoid returning to potentially harmful situations.
