curiosity about memories

For what it's worth, I have tried this mysterious potion in the hopes of erasing, among other things, some rather unpleasant memories. It's called alcohol. The rub is that one shouldn't go through life drunk all the time.
I can tell you, though, that there are about 4 years worth of memories that I am missing thanks to being falling-down, sloppy drunk while I was doing the things I rather wish I could now remember.

Litany, mydear pirate wench, your words moved me. But how can i know what kinda situatioin i should avoid, since every situation would be so different, with their colorful dresses. I was just saying this.

You've been touching the orange glowing light on the stove again haven't you Crystal?

Surely you've learnt from experience before? Surely a part of that learning was to work out which part of the colourful dress was important and which part was just a gaudy distraction sent to tempt and destroy you?

It's been outlined before, but I wouldn't get rid of my memories.
They're the only tool I have to try and stop me getting into a cycle of life traps. To analyse where I've been.

If you don't know where you've been how do you know where you're going?
You become jaded and guarded for a reason: to protect you- using your memories of bad experiences. The only problem is if you're thought processes are flawed and the WAY you think and process this information- you can tend to generalise and make life miserable for yourself perhaps by selectively focusing on wrong memories of your life - and making decisions in the future based on these. It's a fine balance for sure.

Golden memories from the past show me the potential of my life and how it could be made to go - if I try and strive.

On another note, it's almost impossible to tell- but the amount of information we forget is chilling. The only way to really gauge this is if you and some people shared experiences at a particular environment somewhere in the past- and then you realise you'd forgotten several events. I think the mind will tend to push the memory engrams that aren't recalled that much to the back of the mind.
Another way to tell is when you watch a film you like, perhaps with someone else- and compare what you rememeber of it and the events you recall- with the actual film by watching again. The worrying thing I've seen is the number of people that MAKE scenes up and events of that film- these are the types of people that will make events and memories up/ warp and twist events of the past- probably without realising it.

Thank all of you who offered your opinion on my curiosity and/or concern about memory!

had thought i could erase them, both the pleasant and the unpleasant.

A person without memories, whoa, seems no fun, hey?

Selectively removing "bad" or "hurtful" memories- or minimising them- is fundamental to psychotherapy though....

I'm currently writing a Sci fi story about someone with an emerging GENETIC Memory which is effectively re-writing him....

Marquis Rex, honestly, want to thank you as much as i thank for others who wanted to offer help in a way they did not even realize! Anyway.

Hope i can read some of parts of your sci fi stroy in some future.

Regards, :)
