Curious Minds Want to Know

I've been here a whole week, and y'all haven't kicked me out yet! LOL I've had an enjoyable week reading your opinions/suggestions, and "funnies". So, you've now hooked me and I want to know about all of you! I've come up with a few questions for you to answer, if you wish. And if you can think of any other information that might be fun for all of us to know, please add it!

1. When did your love of reading begin?

2. What attracts you to reading versus other forms of relaxation or entertainment?

3. And, what brought you here to this forum?

1. I honestly can't remember a time that I did not enjoy books. I have been an avid reader for as long as I can remember.

2. I can lose myself in reading in ways that are impossible with watching TV or listening to music. It's the perfect escape for me when I need it, and a pleasant pasttime that actually makes me think.

3. I am married to a non-reader (he's still a pretty decent guy, just clueless about books LOL). Recently I discovered I had a little more time on my hands than normal, so I started searching out forums about things that might interest me. I chose to look for forums because I've been volunteering at a hardware review/forum site with my husband for the past few years and I'm comfortable with this medium of communication. Anyway, it wasn't long before I found y'all. :)

1. When did your love of reading begin?
Like you, I cannot recall at time when I didn't love to read. My mother taught me how to read using The Cat in the Hat, and I've never looked back. The only time of my life when I wasn't constantly reading was during my first four years at college when I had no free time.

2. What attracts you to reading versus other forms of relaxation or entertainment?
TV and movies typically just bore me, or fail to capture my attention. Books stimulate my mind and imagination in ways that no other medium can replicate. Plus, I'm a loner, and reading is certainly a one-person activity.

3. And, what brought you here to this forum?
I was looking for a place to discuss books, as I love to read, and wanted to find out more about different authors and genres. My husband is a non-reader, and my friends are currently wrapped up in YA/childrens' fiction, as they are teachers. Therefore, I wanted to find a place where I could find all sorts of book discussions.

I started with Dr Seuss, too! Bears in the night was the first book I actually read, and yes, like you, I was taught by my mother. :D

Oh yeah, I hear you about the loner thing. Especially now that I'm married, I need my quiet time just to myself, and reading certainly provides that for me.

Thanks for sharing! :)

1. When did your love of reading begin?
I have always had an active imagination, and when I was little, I loved to have someone read to me. When I was 2 or 3, I had "Are You My Mother" learned by heart, so I would "read" it to my grandparents. I love to read and write stories, and I have my whole life.

2. What attracts you to reading versus other forms of relaxation or entertainment?
Reading, for me and probably a lot of you, gives me someone else's life to escape into, and to be involved in situations I would otherwise never be able to. It's also exercise for my imagination because you can see characters and places in your mind how you want to, not how a television or movie shows you.

3. And, what brought you here to this forum?
I don't even really remember. I think I was looking for a place to discuss The Da Vinci Code (don't jump down my throat, I'm just answering the question) on a search engine, and this site came up. I was so excited when I found it.

1. When did your love of reading begin?

iv always read! i stole my sisters copies of the famous five when i was a kid! my earliest memory of books is The Ballet Shoes.

2. What attracts you to reading versus other forms of relaxation or entertainment?

well i love films, horse riding and photography too so my time is taken up with alot of activities! reading is left to before bed, unless i have a really good book and everything else stops for that! you can tell if i have a good book as i have bags under my eyes from lack of sleep! lol!

3. And, what brought you here to this forum?

well i am a member of a horsey forum and photography forum so a book forum was a natural step. i also wanted a place where i can share my awful poems, to non judgemental readers! lol! i just searched google for book forums and it came up with this one. i used to be a member of the big read forum but it was having technical problems so i left!

1. When did your love of reading begin? ?

Birth. I come from a family of readers. My mother teaches elementary school, so I had all the tools to learn to read very early. My dad is a musician, so it's hard to say if I read books or music first.

2. What attracts you to reading versus other forms of relaxation or entertainment??

It's totally engrossing, which I can't find in too many other forms of entertainment, except for the very occasional deep conversation. You have all the magical elements of storytelling and language.

3. And, what brought you here to this forum?

I went actively searching for a book forum. There are fewer and fewer people in my life who are interested in discussing books that I read, and we're all reading less than we used to [darn internet :p] and we're all so busy we don't ever seem to get together over dinner anymore. I was already involved in a car forum, and so it dawned on me one day that there was probably a book forum out there, too, and, bless Google, I found it.

1. When did your love of reading begin? ?

From an old suitcase :) I found one in the street and it was filled with old books somebody has dumped. They smelled wonderful. After reading those, I read the Hobbit and loved it. From that point on it has been reading, reading and then some more reading :D

2. What attracts you to reading versus other forms of relaxation or entertainment??

I just feel that books are very magical things. They have a heart. They are warm, real and vital in a way that other mediums are not. They have the beauty of language. They can transport you to other times nad places. They are portable. They can be traded from hand to hand. What is not to like? :)

3. And, what brought you here to this forum?

One day, I was wearing my best knickers when I heard a voice in my head say to my, "GO THE WWW.THEBOOKFORUM.COM." The rest is history. I still have those knickers but I have never heard that voice again...

I like this description! :)

Q 1:

A: had no clear memory about when started, but could remember the name of those books, Green fairytales series. Then I was led to a fairy land, where i had been lingering ,exploring, being astound, once or twice got trapped, yet couldnot escape their attraction, and don't want to. :) [/COLOR]

Q 2. What attracts you to reading versus other forms of relaxation or entertainment??

A: It was amazing that when reading, you just let those characters, scenaries, senarios, waters, mountains, animals, be created on your mind, that you could not only hear the talking, crying, sobbing, laughing, smiling, raining, splashing, whatever the sound/noises and observe, gaze them,(here omitted 3,259 words), but also you could exprience on your own part, and you would feel enkindled (another 3,000 words was ommited ;) ).

Q 3:

A: I was looking for a book at google, then tried my luck to look for some book reviews at whatever bookforums, so, got stuck at this place, and it was only because they (phil_t, Martin, sillywabbit, RaVen,etc, you know about them, huh? :) ) made fun of my username  , and were joking around, .....

I intended to take revenge  , ambushing myself for a pretty long, (hard to catch those cunning creatures, :p ), now I surrendered, well, you know they just showed you their nice friendly smile which I couldnot beat back.
:p anyway. this was the story.

Wabbit, I'm framing your answer to number two! It's beutiful! I had no idea you had it in you! :)

watercrystal, you're dead on about the people here. I came here looking for people to share my pleasure of reading with, and the only reason I'm staying is because I've found them. Good people one and all. :)

Sorry, it wasn't me WC. I can't take credit for it, noper, hu-uh.

Maybe if you do a search for it in here you can find out who the credit should go to.

And BTW, you're welcome (from a few posts ago)

I'm sure I've rambled about this before but...

1. When did your love of reading begin?
When I was a little one, I loved those tape with book things, and my mum invested a lot of time in getting me to read along. I still remember a number of fairy tales that I read as a young one. Then I discovered the local library which (still) has a decent children's selection. Schemes like the Rainbow read (read 15 books over summer and you get badges/certificates etc along the way) helped encourage my reading. I had a long bus journey to school in the mornings, and books helped to pass the time.

2. What attracts you to reading versus other forms of relaxation or entertainment?

I reserve the right to sit on the fence.

95% of all published material's pap, and you need to dig hard to find the good stuff. Every medium- film, tv, theatre, music, comics, telling tales around a campfire etc is valid in its own right, and each has its own strengths and weaknesses in the telling of stories. There are rubbish books, in the same way that there are rubbish films. A good film can be just as good as a good book.

To me, books are simply another medium in which to experience stories. Flights of fancy and imagination. One of the things that strikes me about the book medium in particular is that the experience of a good book consists soley of the amalgamation of the author's words and your imagination with nothing coming in between them. Unlike a large budget medium such as film, the author's words hit you undiluted, and you are at his/her mercy. It's not often that you find a book with the 'wow' factor, but when you do, it's a great feeling.

3. And, what brought you here to this forum?
Google search  I found one forum after wanting to find out a little more about 'A Game of Thrones'- I had no idea that these places existed on the web. Well I was hooked. The other forum I inhabit specialised in science fiction and fantasy novels whereas I also wanted somewhere for classics/crime etc. I found this place a few months back, and the people seemed friendly enough, exuding a communal atmosphere...

What is past is prologue.

Actually, it doesn't matter whether it is you or not. And I do want to thank you for your efforts to bring laughter to other people at thebookforum, (though some of your jokes, i had trouble enjoying). :)

would you please call me crystal or water instead of WC?
Thanks, RaVeN.

Lol. Over here, WC can be an abbreviation for toilet (or restrooms as they're called over in the States) :D

Wondering   should consider to change my name!!!!

I'm sorry Crystal.

I did it on purpose when you first joined but this time was an accident. Don't change your name, you're perfect just the way you are. ;)
