Sneezy, thank you very much. Like you and sparkchaser, I had The Hydrogen Sonata pegged as a standalone that just had to be read. Reading the Culture series looks like it will be very fun.

Conscious Bob, as you see, the crime fiction-loving basement is now a few flights up. Less far for people to walk down into the bowels of B&R. Not that we are in any way the ass-end of this group, of course. We stop at murder on the page. I owe you for this Banks series. I can't wait to start it.

No, no. You don't need an invite to post on Murder, We Schmoozed. We're happy to have everyone join us, and I'm glad you dropped in. I think the odds are very high I'll enjoy the Culture books. Thanks again.

BBC World News tonight on PBS at 10 PM CDT had a story on Carl Hoffman. SAVAGE HARVEST: A TALE OF CANNIBALS, COLONIALISM, AND MICHAEL ROCKEFELLER’S TRAGIC QUEST FOR PRIMITIVE ART. Hoffman is articulate and presented his case well that Rockefeller had been killed and eaten by the Asmat. Commentator seemed to agree. I do recommend the book highly.
 
Donna Tartt's The Goldfinch won the Pulitzer for Fiction today. Also nominated were The Son by Philipp Meyer and The Woman Who Lost Her Soul by Bob Shacochis.

Thanks RTS...now I'll have to tackle Tartt's SECRET HISTORY again. Before I read The Goldfinch.

Surely would like to see a good review of Tartt's books. Did anybody we know do one?

With my background in history, I thought for sure I'd get Clio, Muse of history, but surprisingly I came back as Calliope, the Muse of epic poetry. Guess all those years I taught THE ODYSSEY and chanted the Invocation of the Muse to ninth graders rubbed off! Which Muse are you?

Wow, I disappear for a few years and come back to find that B&R has completely changed and there are new forums in which you all are participating! I've been missing my mystery buddies. Stumbled across Powell website today, which reminded me of some of you so figured it was kismet and I should look you all up!
 
I'm still pouting because Jacquie got her copy of Martin Walker's new Bruno book, CHILDREN OF WAR, from Amazon.uk, and mine STILL hasn't come. It's not fair. I'm going to go sit in the yard and eat worms!

Jane, you have a fabulous memory! Yup, that's me. Dad has been struggling. He's now in a long-term care facility out by my sister. He is wheelchair bound. He needs large print books these days, but he's gonna be 90 and still zips through 3 books a week so his mind is totally all there. We just got him the Rita Mae Brown series starting with Out Foxed. I'm currently reading Fool Moon, part of the Dresden series by Jim Butcher. Kind of dark sarcastic grown up Harry Potter as a hardboiled Chicago detective. I'm completely enamored. And doesn't hurt that Butcher comes from my home state of MO. :)

I've recently read the first five of the Dresden Files books, and know exactly what you mean. They just pull you along.
 
Hi Pontalba. Did you see the 1 season of the Dresden Files they made for TV? It's much fun but of course books are better!
