Debates and Questions in General Chat

RitalinKid said:
I love to discuss tough issues, but I hate name calling and people flying off the handle because someone else has a different opinion. C'mon, we're people. We're going to have different opinions, so debate them and respect them. If you don't respect someone's ideas and you just write them off as stupid or ridiculous, you lose the oppurtunity to rationally discuss the ideas and possibly learn something either about human nature or your own ideas. ...or something.

Well said.

I like the discussions started in General Chat. They give me an opportunity for a little intelligent conversation. I haven't read much lately *gasp*, so I can't talk about books :( (all ten of my library books were due back today and I haven't finished one). If there is a thread I don't want to participate in, it is very easy to just avoid it.

I like the general discussions because the people I hang out with after work don't care to talk about issues, and there's not enough time at work to get into an in depth discussion. Plus, the board lets me sort through me thoughts and state my opinion in an organized way instead of rambling through it orally.

i'm the same as cajunmama. stay at home mom's have a pretty limited arena for any conversation other than what is your kid eating, what are you doing for the science project, my kid eats glue.....etc. even when in the presence of other adults, they are often other moms and you don't want to get into too feisty a conversation in the event that you offend and then all of sudden you are dropped from the coffee morning or the play group.
and like ritalinkid, i like having time to read the other views and think about what i am going to say.

In light of the past days events I really enjoyed re-reading this thread from start to finish...maybe others should re-read it too....
