For more in the Chinatown vein, check out Dashiell Hammett, Raymond Chandler, James Cain - these guys practically created the hard-boiled detective.
For something more Holmesian, you should definitely try any of the Nero Wolfe mysteries by Rex Stout. The prose is clear and snappy and Stout plays fair with his readers (you know everything Wolfe knows). My own personal favorite detective fiction of all time.
For something quite different, try any of the Rex mysteries by Eric Garcia - the premise is kinda out there, but the writing is excellent.
