Detective Recommendation Please

I've recently finished Dennis Lehane's Kenzie and Genarro series. What a great read. I'd love to start a new detective (or something in that vein) series, but not one that's too far along. Is there anything out that is exciting and only a few books in that would allow me to follow an author/character for a while like I was able to with Lehane?

The Michael Connely, Lee Child and Patricia Cornwell series seem overwhelming (20+ books each), but certainly intriguing. Please help!

I like Lehane a lot as well. Part of what I like is that he really knows the area (Boston) that his stories are set in. Another author I love and would recommend would be James Lee Burke's Dave Robicheaux series set in New Iberia and New Orleans Louisiana. There are a lot of them, but oh man, are thy great. If you liked Lehane you would probably love Burke. If you try them, start with an earlier one like Heavens Prisoners, Dixie City Jam, or Burning Angel.
If you want something less than 20 volumes, the only thing I can think to recommend is James Ellroy's L.A. Quartet. It is excellent but be prepared : Ellroy has sort of a weird style and the stories are very dark.
