directors/writers

a was posting in another thread a little comment about writer mario vargas llosa directing back in the 70's a movie about his own book (Captain Pantoja and the Special Services)

so the question here its: do you know of any other writers directing films based on their own books? and how was it? (that film i was talking about was bad) :p

one example

I can't remember writers that directed their own books, but I can think of directors who wrote the stories of their films, the first example that comes to my mind right now is Sophia Coppolla. She wrote and directed Lost in translation which won some Oscars as far as I know.
The film didn't impress me that much to be honest, but I liked Virgin Suicides, one of her earlier films.

I thought both were great films. The two books of Jeffrey Eugenides (The Virgin Suicides and Middlesex) are both certainly worth reading - excellent narratives.

Do not get me started on Lost In Translation!

As for writer/directors. He wasn't gonna be the director, but Douglas Adams was always very closely attached to the filmversion of his book. Until he died, that is. :(

Cheers

He was actively involved in the game.

yeah but its not the same, he wrotes screenplays to be filmed, i meaned, somebody directing a film based on a previously published material (a know book) which happens to been wrote by himself (or herself)

Stephen King did direct Maximum Overdrive based on his novella "Trucks"

also Clive barker (Hellraiser, Lord of Illusions) tends to direct his own literary products.

Johnny Got His Gun

The first example that comes to my mind is Johnny Got His Gun by Dalton Trumbo. He also directed the movie adaptation of his novel.
But i can't tell you about the quality, because i haven't seen the movie yet, well i also haven't read the novel too

Right now, this is the only example that comes to my mind, except the already mentioned of course!!
