Do any of you read Manga?

If you don't know, "manga" are Japanese graphic novels. One I enjoyed is called "Welcome To The NHK", about a man suffering from a real Japanese phenomena, which is being a "hikkikimori". These are people who have developed a fear of the outside world, and stay indoors, often for years at a time without ever stepping foot outside.

Another one I enjoyed, is called "I'll Give It My All...Tomorrow". This is about a forty year old man who's dissatisfied about his life, and quit his job to pursue a career as graphic novelist (maybe it's a bit autobiographical). It's a pretty gripping, comical story, with an interesting relationship between the man and his daughter.

Anyone else here into Manga?

I think this says it all. And yes that is the entire set of Rurouni Kenshin in Japanese.

That seems like a symptom for otakus.

Seems like you're a fan of anime/manga from the nineties...those titles brought back some memories. I'd say my top five from that decade are Kenshin, DBZ, Marmalade Boy, Hana Yori Dango, and Gunbuster.

And dito on "otakus". They're today's trekkies.

I am trying to remember the last manga that I read... I think I was getting either Vampire Knight or Tail of the Moon from the library. I haven't been in the mood to read any for a very long time. I have yet to finish the second half of YuYu Hakusho or even start my Sailor Moon volumes... I've pretty much been having a drought when it comes to watching anime as well.

Yeah, same here. I haven't really watched much anime over the years myself. When anime was just an obscure niche, it was fun and edgy. When it became popular and mainstream all over the world, it just didn't have the soul and boldness it once had. I actually wrote an article on that.

I think you'd get a kick out of the Elfin Lied anime. It has a sweet love-story element to it, but much, much edgier. It's also short (about twelve episodes), so you don't have to commit a lot of cash to it.

I checked our anime collection and Elfin Lied is already on the shelf, but I haven't seen it.

Is there any manga-ka's style that you like? I'm partial to Kaoru Yuki myself.

Definitely watch Elfin Lied sometime soon, you'll love it.

As far as artists...I like Tite Kubo's style (Bleach), though the series itself has long past its expiration date. One of my fav artists is the one from Death Note (can't remember his name). His style is dynamic and superb. I also like the artist of the NHK manga that I mentioned before in the first post. The reason, is because his style is much more realistic. I'm pretty tired of the giant-eye/rediculously-large-hair style of drawing.

Never really got into "Manga" - Closest thing that I enjoy would be the cartoon, Dragon Ball Z. Always loved watching it, even at my old age :) Maybe I should give them a try and see what they are all about. I've heard good things, and I've heard bad things. Guess it just depends what ya read.

I did a simple google search today and got millions of results lol. Can anyone give a quick suggestion list for recommended titles? For a beginner at least

I enjoy Manga and Anime, but since the spousal unit retired and I went to dayshift, I am unable to watch as much as I used to.

So, I am out of touch.

As you saw for yourself there's a lot to choose from. Any genre you prefer?

Ok so I got a hold of some Full Metal Alchemist and I must say it is rather interesting. They kinda remind me of adult comic books lol. It's pretty cool overall though I guess. Not something I would become a die hard hard over though
