Do You Believe...?

It was ten minutes long and you didn't give any indication what it was about, but the first 30 seconds were about people coming back from the dead, so I assumed it involved eating braaaaaaaains.

It's pretty mysterious I think: Life-after-death experiences. And they are universal. So very odd and fascinating.

Universal? Your word, AQB, but I think that's a stretch. And life-after-death strikes me as something of a misnomer too. But perhaps you can enlighten me.

My father died some years back.

Fortunately he was in a hospaital and asleep at the time. So the doctor revived him and, again fortunately, he "came back" and lived for quite a few more years.

Unfortunately, he didn't return with any story to tell about.

When the doctor asked him the next morning: "Do you remember anything unusual happening last night?" my father replied: "No, nothing. Like what? I slept straight through as far as I know."

When the doctor told him: "Well, you were dead for a while last night," my father replied: "Really?! I don't remember a thing about it."

So, Aqua, what is it you are asking?
Do people report these experiences?
or
Is there life after death?

Let me ask you:
Do you call the reported experiences "life?"

PS. "Odd and fascinating?" I don't really think so anymore, after having heard a quite a few of them. Sorry, just my own reaction.

Further PS. I did check out the link but the gentleman was way too slow in telling his story, so I pulled the plug on him when I got the drift of what was coming. He was evidently much more interested in his story than I was.

I saw, either in that telecast or another, that similar experiences do occur in death-to-life experiences around the globe. I find that strange. Now I am a Darwinist myself so such things should not concern me...but...for some reason they do so I wanted to share and find out who else finds this odd mystery fascinating.

Why should it not concern you? I don't think you know what Darwinist means.

Nothing strange about that. People believe in ghosts, UFO abductions, homeopathy, and all sorts of nonsense all over the world too.

What I mean is that according to some programs I have seen on the subject, they report that weird experiences such as a light at the end of a tunnel or meeting already dead family members in that "dead" dimension has been told by some regardless of culture all around the world. That's what I understand.

I just find it odd; that does not mean I believe, that just mean that I find it strange. How would you explain those people's experiences on the bio channel program (link)? Should we fear death?? I really do not know. That's why I created this thread - to read what you think about such visions after death.

I subscribe to scientific fact - the biological branch called evolution. Pinker might shed some light on the issue if only I can read some of his expert perspectives on the subject.

I think I do know what Darwinism is spark. If you see that I do not, please enlighten me.

I know, and I , of course, do not believe that any of those non-factual, mind illusions are real, I hold judgment on the life-after-death oddity. It is not that believe in such claims, it's just that I can't, for some reason, say it is fantasy (in this one case/issue). I just FEEL it MIGHT be true. That's why I would like you guys to address my concerns.

I think I have read the same sort of things Pontiac, regarding people having similar experiences (Bright light or tunnel or something along those lines). It's sort of like how different people tend to describe aliens as looking the same way over and over again.
Who knows? I don't have much of a scientific mind but some aspects of science fascinate me and I watch TV shows (through the wormhole) and read books and it seems that the overriding thing I take away from this stuff is that we really don't know very much at all about a lot of things. So I don't rule anything out. One thing is for sure though, we will all find out what happens to us when we die at some point! :whistling:

Kind of hard to address your concerns unless you tell us what they are, so can you say why you feel, sorry, FEEL it MIGHT be true and why you can't say it's fantasy...?

My concern is simple: am I the ONLY one who feels that this might have some truth in it or can it be explained as the actions of the mind at the initial phase of death? I just need something to hold on to even though it is a mystery. What does your gut say?

See above re: ghosts, UFOs and homeopathy.

Why are these not just the mind "winding down" and having a final dream as it uses up the last of its chemicals (which is my wild-assed personal guess). There's nothing that amazing about having dreams is there?

Are there really no explanations/conjectures available from hard scientists? Such as one might find via google, for example?

And PS, Aqua, just to clarify my earlier post with some answers to the questions I raised, and to respond to your questions.

I don't have any reason to doubt that some people actually have such mental images at the threshold of death.

But, I do rather severly doubt that they have anything to do with so-called life after death.

So, they make no difference to me.
