do you keep track of the books you read?

I pretty much never forget whether or not I've read a book. I may not be able to discuss it because I cannot remember certain happenstances but I will remember whether or not I've cracked it open.
This is pretty much the same for me. I have a photographic memory. Though sometimes unfortunate, it comes in rather handy when I'm in the bookstore.

The glazed look I get in my eyes when I enter is more like a kid who steps into a candy store for the first time. I'm so overwhelmed I just don't know where to start. The hubby says that whenever we pass a bookstore and don't enter it (I can't shop for books with Mr. Impatience) that I have the saddest look of longing on my face, like I just lost my puppy.

I've never made a list, but it is a great idea. If nothing else, just to see exactly how many books I read in a year. The hubby claims that I have more books than Imelda Marcos had shoes. He's probably right.

I don't keep a list, because I can remember what I've read. However, I've often thought about keeping one, just to see what I've read in a particular year. Then again, maybe I shouldn't do this - if my husband knew how many books I went through a year, he'd probably not be so cool about my occasional book-buying binges.

Do what I do. When I bring a megabag full of books home, I talk about what a great deal I got by buying so many at one time. And, I make sure to mention any promo or coupon that gave me a discount also. It makes it a little easier for him to see the actual amount I spent and not have a complete coronary, knowing that it could've been a whole lot more.

I have decided to make a list of the books I read. Since I buy all of my books, it will also help me to know just what books I have in my library as well. Entering the back data is going to be the difficult part.

Do You Remember the Books you read?

I have absolutely no problem since I am a book reviewer and once I read a book, I write my review in a blog and forward the review to the author, publicist etc. I fine tune the review taking into account the feed-back from them and then post the review at several places including here. So, it is always easy for me to just go to the blog and see the long list of the books.

I also add the books to my book-shelf at Shelfari, GoodReads and a few online sites that allow you to maintain your book shelf.

I recommend that you too adopt a similar approach.

I've been keeping track of mine in a Excel spread sheet for about 10 years. I don't really have a good reason for doing. I just like too :).

I have kept a notebook since 2004 listing all the books I have read. It comes in very handy.

Always. I even separate the reads from the unreads. It makes me feel good.
And I like to think that it isn't for show, since all the outsider usually sees is a bunch of books in piles that aren't marked "Read" and "Unread"...yet :p

Lately I've been keeping track of the books I've been reading via facebook's "Books" option. You can list the books you read and even write comments about them. Before that, I never did keep track since I usually remembered what I read. There were a few times where I forgot a few titles but those were merely rare exceptions ;).

I think I've posted here before, but I will again, i have something to add. I keep track of books just to see how many I read per year/month/etc...it's fairly interesting. I also like to keep track so that I can write to authors and it's easier for me.

I keep track of my books with software from collectorz.com. It cost me a little bit of money but the software works well. I might have been just as happy with the LibraryThing website but it's too late now.

I use the collectorz software as well, it works great for my needs. I also have their DVD collection software. Only downside is the cost, but it does work well as VoodooPunk said.

I am in constant awe of you folks who manage not only to start a list of books read, but to actually keep it up. I tried countless times: little spiral notebooks, spreadsheets etc. - and I keep finding those lists, some of of them 10 or more years without an update.

Oh well. The only systems that seems to work for me: I just buy the books and keep them. By and large, whatever I have on my book-shelf, I have at least started to read, if not always finished.

Unfortunately, my house is not really big enough. Eventually, I suppose I will have to think of something else.

Thanks for the tip, checked that out and have started listing all my books over the past 3 years, phew!

I keep a book of library books I borrow, mainly as I am reading so many books at once I don't finish that many, so I note where I am up to when I borrow it again. I also note if I have bought my own copy of the book, and when I finish a book.

The only year I counted how many I read was the year I got married, I think. I got through 120 books, which was a pretty good effort for a slow reader like me. I spent a lot of time away from home that year...

I don't know why I do it, but I usually keep a note of what I've read in the back of a diary – with a quick rating system.

I don't even attempt to keep track of books from years ago, but ever since last years August, I have however compiled a list of books I've finished.

It's a simple list. Last updates go as follows:
1st October 2007: Onni Palaste - Minä, desantti (translation: "I am partisan")
12th October 2007: Patrick O'Brian - Tides of War.

I'm not a quick reader. One book per month is my average speed.

I only keep a library of them. My shelfs have slowly filled up with them and I only place them on the shelf if I have read them.

I have a similar system - I place books I've read upright, others are either on my desk or sideways. I suppose it's not too good for the books, but it makes it easier for me..plus then I can brag about the amount of french books I've read.
