Does anyone know this book?

I read it about five years ago, and it probably isn't by a very well-known author as I bought it from a "cheapy" book shop. It's about some people at a university who travel back in time for research projects. A woman goes back to the time of the bubonic plague in England, and there is possibly a problem with her getting back to her own time. All I can remember is that she is immune to the plague 'cos of modern medicines, and basically she nurses the people around her as they succumb one by one to the plague. I can't remember what happens in the end.

Yes, it was a cheery little tale! Any ideas about author or title? Oh yes, the cover was quite blue - now that must just give the answer away!! (If anyone knows this I'll be very impressed.)

has to be the doomsday book by connie wills look at it on amazon .com you will see the cover and be able to read the first chapter or so.

Yep, it's "Doomsday Book", and it's utterly fascinating, both in its depictions of the past and the "present" (the future, to us).

It might also be "Timeline" by Michael Crichton. The paperback cover was blue, I remember. The plot is very similar.

If I'm not mistaken it was nominated for a Hugo--not a cheapy pulp novel by any means! Willis is a very good writer.

Was it? Ooh! I mistakenly assumed that because it was from a "cheapy" book store, it was an unknown author or not very good, so therefore had not sold and needed to be sold off cheaply. I must have liked it though, for it to stick in my mind for the last five years. Now, if only I knew exactly where in the house it is stored, I would read it again!

That book is great!

I read it years ago.... She was staying with a family and got to watch the progress of the plague in the town she was in... I was thinking about it only a week or two ago.

Connie Willis is great

I just discovered her a year ago. I read about Lincoln's Dreams, but when I left Borders, To Say Nothing of the Dog was what had ended up in my bag. This is a lovely story that is something of a tribute to Jerome K. Jerome's book Three Men in a Boat - not scifi or fantasy but something most people will enjoy. I have already re-read it twice when I ran out of stuff at home and couldn't get to the bookstore anytime soon. (I live in a small town far away from everything.)

Hmm, this is another exception to my rant about time travel in another thread. Wonder if anyone will catch me and demand an explanation?
