Dogville

I suddenly want to talk about Dogville. I think it's one of the most interesting films I've ever seen, and it has one of the most satisfying endings too.

What did you think?

It's very interesting - the whole movie is shot in a hangar of some sort, with chalked outlines of buildings and roads. At first I thought 'Not another crappy movie pretending to be tasteful arthouse flick.' I don't know about the arthouse bit, but it certainly was inventive and the story sure doesn't suck.

Btw, did you finish watchingthe whole LOTR trilogy you got for your bday? How many DVDs does ROTK have? I saw 5.

Wow

Excelent, great, moving, thrilling, stop me because I might get too enthusiastic about it.

But I liked it a lot and I think Nicole Kidman is wonderful, she is a real living legend no matter what Lauren Bacall said ( that she is yoo young to be a legend ).

At first I was a bit afraid I wouldn’t like it, being too experimental for me, but then I loved it. The lack of spectacular props, landscapes, extras, things that make a blockbuster, made Dogville even stronger. The absence of doors and walls stimulated the viewer’s imagination and emphasized the actors’ performance, the feelings. The theatrical illusion made it so real and so touching. And it’s one of the films that makes you think and want to talk about.

I think I talked too much though, but I’ll be back. What do you think of Dogville?

Dogville is one of my favorite movies of all time and that's because of it's originality and movie-scenic combination! This is one of Nicole's best movies!
The strangest thing about this Dogville (idea) movie is that it appeared first in Denmark as a 15 minutes pilot movie, directed by the same Lars von Trier (Dancer in the Dark) with only two danish actors. According to IMDB was kind of crap (2.1/10 stars). Then the original appeared and enlightened me!

Thelma... I loved the movie. It started out slow and I almost gave up, but then things started to happen. The ending was good. The deeds were done, however, and I still feel a little for Grace despite the hugely satisfying finale.

I'm pretty upset to find that Nicole is not back for the sequel to Dogville.

I watched this yesterday afternoon because it was raining and was taken completely by surprise. I didn't know much about the film so was not prepared for the feel of a play, the darkness, or the ending. Now, I can't stop thinking about it. On the DVD I watched there was a little section called "Confessions" where the actors gave a kind of video diary throughout filming. It was pretty funny in places and contrasted nicely with the film itself.

Hey Clara! Was talking about politics and immediately thought about you. :)

I think one of the best ways to see Dogville is not to have any idea as to what the film is about, and just let the film take us for a ride. I also had no idea what the film was about apart from Nicole Kidman being there, so I was not expecting the sort of emotions that I felt during the film.

I couldn't stop thinking about the film for sometime too.

Uh oh, is that a bad thing? Only joking :) Actually, there were quite a few political themes going on Dogville I thought. Tyranny of the majority, the issue of an 'outsider', human greed... I might have to watch it again before I send it back in the post.

Trust me, it's a good thing. :) It wasn't political to me, more of a 'the more things change, the more they stay the same' feeling to me. In the end, Grace
became what she ran away from in the first place

I have not watched the movie since i saw it originally last year in the cinema. I was slightly put off i'll admit by the visuals and how it was staged but after about 15 minutes i was sucked into it and continously engrossed for what i imagine was 3 hours. I did feel i guess somewhat used emotionally by the movie but it was worth it for its sheer greatness. I need topick it up on dvd but im forever waiting for it to drop that extra 2 euro!
