Jude in Jude the Obscure is a pretty good (though tragic) example.

Also Pip in Great Expectations, the title character in Eva Luna, and Dagny Taggart in Atlas Shrugged. Moving away from Literature, you've also got Prior Philip in The Pillars of the Earth and Peekay in The Power of One.
