Eurovision Song Contest 2005 (Ukraine)

I admit I watched it. Come on, it's a cultural icon! I'm always amazed at the difference in tastes of the different competing countries and how political the voting is sometimes. Can you believe they actually had a semi-final to see who would make it to last night? Bring back ABBA :D

It's been going for a very long time now 20 or 30 years... not sure, but too damn long :D

50th Anniversary Year.

Anyway, I never watch it because it's poo :D

And there was me thinking that the primary reason was because you claim not to have a television. ;)

I'm even amazed at the taste in my country. Unfortunatly I ended up watching the danish selection when the showed it, I still haven't recovered.

Every time this show is on I wonder why they don't have songs that people would actually want to hear. Why not take artists that are big in their own country and let them battle it off... Then perhaps you would be able to watch it with combining it with some sort of drinking game.
I don't think big names want to participate. It'd be too much of an embarrasment if they didn't win.

They kinda did, with that girl Charlotte winning for Sweden (?).

So do they write their own songs or just do covers?

Thanks Stewart. What would we do without Wikipedia? I tried googling and got the official site, but it's a mess.

In the UK we have a drunk Irishman doing a voiceover throughout the whole thing as he calls all the entries crap and makes sarcastic comments at every opportunity.

It's Terry Wogan that makes it vaguely entertaining! :D I never watch it, in fact I avoid it, but for some reason I always end up seeing the voting at the end (this is probably the best way, as it means I don't hear the songs).
The voting is strangely compelling, even though you know it's all tactical and everyone votes for their neighbouring countries.

The songs are completely irrelevant. It just depends on how popular you are with your neighbouring countries. If anyone could be bothered to look you would probably find that the few times we in the UK have won have been in years when we haven't been bombing the crap out of some other country in the few years before. Now that Tony is best buddies with George we haven't a chance in hell. Not that anyone gives a shit anyway (apart from their mums maybe).

Sorry if it sounds a bit political it not supposed to be, unlike the eurovision song contest.

Who won anyway?

Greece won I believe, as Stewart said earlier. Anyways, it cant possibly be the worst singers in the country, as we didnt have a heavily-pregnant Jordan up there 'singing' <shudders>

Phil :D
