Ever broken up with someone over books?

I've noticed this when chatting with Americans on other forums. Some, but not by any means many, Americans seem almost proud of being ignorant.
Being an American, I'm stung by this observation, but must admit that it is very close to accuracy. Being a "beerwench" online I get people all of the time who wish to discuss beer, drinking, partying, etc. However, when I show any amount of intelligence whatsoever, they instantly begin to mock me and assume that I'm fat and ugly. I'm not sure where the perception originates, but it does seem to be a popular one. Apparently women cannot be intelligent, attractive, appreciate beer and poker as well as reading and knowledge at the same time. It's sad really.

I'd have a very hard time sticking with a man who didn't read novels, because it's so much fun talking about them! I was the one who got my husband hooked on Michael Chabon, and he persuaded me to read DFW's Infinite Jest--in fact, I read it twice, and so did he, and we are the only two people we actually know, nonvirtually, that is, who love talking about that book. Reading books and talking about them is a big part of my life, and I couldn't be happy with someone who was glued to TV.

He also got me to dump crappy light beer and go for the good stuff--life is short. And I taught him to love his mother's Mincemeat pie....

good luck, doogster

He's a keeper!

I'm already happily married, Doog, but I'll keep you in mind should that ever change.;)

I broke up with my boyfriend of many years who didn't read and I'm now dating a lecturer who does!!!! *She is happy*

We talk about books and movies and it is fantastic!

So I can certainly understand why someone would want to break up with a non-reader...
