Fareed Zakaria: The Post American World

The New York Times has an excellent review of this book, it does look like a compelling read, definitely something to check out if you are into foreign affairs and politics.

In his new book, “The Post-American World,” Mr. Zakaria writes that America remains a politico-military superpower, but “in every other dimension — industrial, financial, educational, social, cultural — the distribution of power is shifting, moving away from American dominance.” With the rise of China, India and other emerging markets, with economic growth sweeping much of the planet, and the world becoming increasingly decentralized and interconnected, he contends, “we are moving into a post-American world, one defined and directed from many places and by many people.”

I've read a couple of his earlier books and been very impressed with them. Fareed Zakaria was on The Daily Show yesterday, talking about this latest book. I'm glad to see he feels somewhat encouraged by the future, but he seems to be much more a citizen of the world than an American-centric person, and the sorts of things he might find encouraging are things that many Americans might find thoroughly alarming.

This book is now on my ever-increasing "Get to this side of Doomsday" list.

For something longer than a review but shorter than reading the book itself Zakaria also published an article in Foreign Affairs this month.

Reminds me of the book:

The End of America: Letter of Warning to a Young Patriot -- by Naomi Wolf
