Favorite Female Writers

I recently finished Midaq Alley, and enjoyed it, though it was "lighter" than I expected. Like you, I admire "Wuthering Heights", and while I didn't like the "Heart is a Lonely Hunter" as well as you, I loved "The Member of the Wedding" by Carson McCullers, which is more of a coming-of-age story.

Reading through this thread I've realized that I actually don't read a lot of female authors... I'll have to look into some of these authors ya'll have listed.

My favorites include Jane Austen, Melanie Rawn, Ursula Le Guin, and Emily Bronte. I'm reading Mercedes Lackey right now and really enjoying her, so I'll probably add her to the list.
 
I have lots of favorites. Right now I'm really enjoying Nora Roberts writing as JD Robb. I thought I'd get bored after the first couple of books, but so for I haven't. I was looking forward to the tv movies they made from some of her books and was totally disappointed in them. I hope if they make movies from the JD Robb books that they don't ruin them.
 
Margaret Atwood is the first that comes to mind. Other than that, I like Jane Austen, Charlotte or Emily Bronte, and Ayn Rand.

hmm....there arent that many female authors i like really..hmm lemme see...cornelia funke wasnt too bad cept for all the swearing in the inkheart trilogy other than that i liked them...umm...emily dickenson comes to mind i love her poems...ok i know there are more but i just cant think of them right now:p
 
Yes, Cornelia Funke is good - and characters can curse all they want without annoying me, personally. ;) I might also include Patricia Wrede, J.K. Rowling, Pamela Dean, and/or Holly Black if we count YA authors.

Can't forget Anne Rice. Her early books were so beautiful. Then along came The Vampire Armand and the rest of her work has been wildly uneven in terms of quality.

Well, if we're talking about this genre, let's look at some more recent examples. And don't be afraid to look at the thread on erotica on this site. My favorites in the genre would be Pauline Reage's The Story of O and Anne Rice's Beauty trilogy, and Fiona Locke's recent Over the Knee.
