You know, eyez0nme, 'film' is just the stuff used to make movies. That's like calling a novel 'paper and ink'. definitions are killers, so let's just start again
I'd have to say
The Exorcist: never scared me once! In fact, the first time I saw it, mislead by the hype that called it the greatest horror movie of all times (it hasn't done this movie any favours, I think), I felt bored to death! When I watched it again I saw it as a beautiful drama about a mother trying to save her daughter from an unstoppable evil, resorting to anything that could help her, even exorcism.
Jason Miller, Ellen Burstyn, Linda Blair, Max Von Sydow, Lee J. Cobb... what an amazing cast! Miller in particular has won my eternal admiration for his performance as a doubt-stricked, rational priest who doesn't believe in demons and sacrifices himself to save a young girl.
The script is brilliant! William Peter Blatty never wrote anything decent again, but
The Exorcist just develops unlike any horror movie I've ever seen: it's amazing that before going for the exorcism, Burstyn tries doctors and psychologists to see what's wrong with her daughter... you know, like actual people would do. Such realism is so rare in horror movies.
I could write about this beautiful movie for hours; suffice to say, it's one of best cinematic experiences I've ever had!
