French books

So, as I wrote in my introduction, I'm French.
And I know that not many French books are translated in English, but I did a little research to find which one are and see what you may know about French literature.

(I created a challenge on my blog for those who are tempted to read some of them. Feel free to go and see the list.)

Have you read some French books ? Did you enjoyed it/them ? :)

i really liked les liasion dangeruse, and pretty much all of alexander dumas' books. I think that's about all the french books that I have read besides famous philosophers. I read them in english by the way. I took french for 4 semesters in college, but I read and speak it at like a elementry or middle school level haha

Well that's already a good number !

How did you discovered them ? School ? Library ?

i watched this movie called cruel intentions, and then read about it online and found out that it was based off of les liasion dangeruse, so i bought it haha. i just read the others because they have been made into some movies haha.

I've read only about 10 from your challenge list -- oddly, none on your list from this century -- but also a few not on your list (Proust's entire Remembrance, Suite Francaise, and some Simenon and Duras, for examples).

When and if I get around to reading those still unread on my shelves, the number will go up by perhaps half a dozen more. All of which, though still low, is not so unusual for me; I generally do only about 10-30% on any list I look at, anyway. C'est la vie. :flowers:

Yeah, most famous French authors are from the last three centuries. The other aren't well known abroad, but we have some really great ones !

Alexandre Dumas has been a favorite since high school when I read The Three Musketeers from the school library. One more book to read and I'll have finished the Musketeers saga.

I can't see a link to your blog so unfortunately I can't comment on your list, but personally I'm a huge fan of Georges Perec. I started reading Le Clezio after he won the Nobel, but I need to read some more of him too.

The newer French authors I've tried, though - people like Houllebecq, Carrère and Darrieussecq - haven't really agreed with me. But I'm always open to suggestions.

(I love your sig, btw.)

I've been listing new books on a French books blog. I'll expand it to old soon... Houllebecq could never draw me in either, nor le Clezio. Have to give Perec another chance.
