George R.R. Martin: A Game of Thrones

So I happened to pick up the first volume after seeing the first two seasons of the TV show, and having a week from hell, I figured it would make for light enough reading.

And I like it - hopefully not enough to speed through the rest, I like the pace of the TV show and they did some small tweaks to the story that I'm really liking (aging everyone up a few years, for starters) but it's hard not to be amazed with Martin's world-building and the way he makes the old high-fantasy Tolkienesque tale of virtuous knights and mysterious woods clash with cold hard political reality. He's not a great stylist, but I'm willing to bet that some of it is the translation I read, and even if you could easily trim 100 pages and not lose anything it's nowhere near as bloated as some other fantasy works I've tried.

So, not a very strong :star4:, but hard to put down and the sort of book you can just disappear into for years.

Welcome! Prepare to become progressively disillusioned with this series with each new book. But you will not be able to stop. No matter what.
 
Currently reading A Dance with Dragons. The moment I finish this book, I'll start watching the whole series on tv.
I really like the books because they read pretty easy even if the story is a bit complicated at times. I was surprised that they read so much easier in English than in Dutch, haha.
Don't really have a full opinion on A Dance with Dragons yet, I want to finish it first. But the others were very good. Happy to have read them.
 
I found that 1,000 main characters was a few too many. The TV series has cut it down to 32 [this according to Martin's own web site].
I would have prefered Martin to stick to the original trilogy rather than the 10 volumes he now plans!

Unless Martin dies before he finishes the 10 volumes plus the Cook Book he is currently writing!
 
I may just decide to read the series and forego watching anymore of it. It seems to be trying to out shock the week before with
excessive violence, gore and rape.
 
"Guns will not Kill People, George R.R Martin's Kill" hahahaha this perfectly suites for him but still I like All the series of Game of thrones!!
 
I really "dig" the books. It's just that sometimes I'm annoyed with all the descriptions and all. Martin really goes into the details and I find that annoying. Still, it's not a dull read or anything like that, it's just like I said, sometimes annoying. My favourite books was the last one, Dance of The Dragons. Don't really why I prefer it over the others.
 
Yeah, but describing food on the table, sigils... to the smallest detail, argh! Reader has it's own image in his thoughts, even if you describe everything to nano details. It's just not necessary. Books are still great though :).

I'd give book 5 the lowest rating. It was 800 pages of nothing happening to progress the story along. Book 4 was ok while 1-3 are the best fantasy books I've ever read.

I started book 5 and I just can't seem to delve into it the way I did the earlier ones. I'll give it another try when I'm not as busy. Wow, 3 out of 5???
