Girl lives in house which has secret Cupola

I read a childrens book, in the late 80s in Australia, which was about a young girl who lived in a house which had a secret cupola. She would go and hide there away from her parents and siblings. I cannot remmeber the books name or author, or even which country it was set in.
If anyone remembers this book, could they please help me out

I seem to recall a similar book, as I wanted one of these as a kid. Hmm... I'll keep thinking about a title, but nothing else is coming back yet.

sounds familiar to me as well- does it have a girl named Mona in it that wants to be an actress, and is there also a part in the story where one of the girl characters finds a ring in the water? (And do they find out it has a cupula because they are looking at the outside of the house and realise it has one, but there isnt any way to get to it from the inside?) 'course, i dont remember the title either, but.. i'll think on it.

What about this one? It does have a character called Mona who wants to be an actress in it, and it seems of the right vintage (I recall it was an older book): The Four Story Mistake by Elizabeth Enright

Nice work! That is the book I was thinking of, anyway. Hope its the one Hianda was thinking of.
Now, if you could just use your uncanny bookfinding skills to find the title of my earlier post, i'd sleep at night...

i dont think that is the book though

i think it was written more recently than that and some of the girls siblings were toddlers. I believe the father was working on renovating the house and the cupola was discovered from the inside of the house.

it may have been an obscure australian chidrens book which i'll have to search a long time to find, but thanks to all who've helped.

Yeah, it didn't seem quite right to me either, hianda. Although it was the one Imogen had identified... I'll keep looking, though. I recall reading it at about the time you mentioned because I remember a house in my neighbourhood was just being built and it had a cupola. I think the girl used to look down on her family and they didn't know she was there. I wanted to be her in the new house that was built!!

Will definately post here if I find it.
