Goosebumps

I'm quite surprised there isn't a thread regarding this insanely popular book series. Especially when I just know that everyone here has at least read one of the novels. :D

Anyway, who else is (don't be ashamed, hell I am too) or used to be a fan? I can't be alone; I grew up with these damn books, and so did everyone else. They were fiercely huge while growing up, and were the "in" thing to read (remember, it actually used to be cool to read something?). Though I'm too old now, and do not read the Goosebumps novels anymore... and though I've sold most of my collection, I still am completely unable to part with my favorites. And those are:

- The Horror At Camp Jellyjam
- The Ghost Next Door
- Say Cheese And Die
- The Haunted Mask
- Stay Out Of The Basement
- Welcome To Dead House

What made these books special was that they were effective. Many of them had dark endings, and all had utterly chilling moments. I really think it helped my character as a child.

Everyone else can take on from this point... Discuss.
 
Ahhh (nostalgic sigh)... good ol' RL Stine. What would the heady days of my youth been mispent doing had it not been for the gripping Goospebumps series? We shall never know, for I was as obsessed as all my school chums. I only remember reading from the intital series (none of this Give Yourself Goosebumps nonsense for me, thanks), and some of my favourites were:

Say Cheese and Die! - one of the scariest things I have ever read
Night of the Living Dummy - resulting in an irrational fear of ventrilquism puppets.
You Can't Scare Me
The Scarecrow walks at Midnight - resulting in an irrational fear of scarecrows
The Horror at Camp Jellyjam - for its sheer ridiculousness
Vampire Breath - for the vampire factor
The Blob That Ate Everyone - for the best title in children's fiction, possibly ever
and
The Curse of Camp Cold Lake - for genuine scares, this one.

Dun-dun-dun-dundun! Viewer beware, you're in for a scare!!! (the tv series was crap, wasn't it?)
 
Yeah, I was obsessed with these books. I always looked forward to a new one being released, and bought it right away. I think my parents became annoyed. :p

And the cover of The Scarecrow Walks At Midnight was enough for me.

Haha, damn - this takes me back to the good old days.

Oh, and I used to be a fanatic of the TV series as well... That and Are You Afraid Of The Dark? I was a kid; I was stupid. :D
 
The scariest Goosebump book I read, has to be that theme park one, where the custodians and the employees are actual, real monsters, instead of people in suits. Truly ingenious, creative, I was in awe of this book. I was scared out of my pants as it reached climax. Anyone know the title of this book?

I loved these books! I think I read most of them, but some favorites that I can remember right now were:

The Horror at Camp Jellyjam
The Curse of Camp Cold Lake- This one really scared me when I was nine
Vampire Breath
Welcome to Dead House- I read this one shortly before moving to a new town, and my dad was quick to point out we lived on a 'Dead End' road. I swear I had recurring zombie nightmares until I was 12. :eek: I had stopped reading the books by then, but I still had the dreams once in a while.
The Werewolf of Fever Swamp
A Night in Terror Tower
One Day at HorrorLand

Oh yeah... And of course all of the Night of the Living Dummy books.
 
I've read 2 or 3 of these goosebumps books. But they don't capture my interest, kind of boring.

The goosebumps books are quite popular, I have to agree on that point.

Haha! I read those as a kid as well. It was the 'cool' thing to read because our teacher didn't like them. (Not related to topic but I think it's cool--she spent our recesses reading the Animorphs novels).
I can't remember any of the titles but I think Curse of Camp Cold Lake freaked me out. Let's see...there was one where a family moved next door and the narrorator thought they were ghosts...then she turned out to be the ghost. That was a good one.
I'd totally forgotten about these books. Good topic.
 
I'm reading this thread with a nostalgic smile :) . Goosebumps where the first books to start reading. I had a bunch of them, but gave them to my friend's brother. He now have a nice collection of them.

I remember that I really enjoyed the seires: Blood Monster, though it gets bad in the last book (the fourth I guess). As long as I remember, the scariest one was Be careful what you wish for.
 
Most of them didn't scare me in particular, except the one of the Night of the Living Dummy series that involves pea soup. It was really icky, and I pictured it too vividly, so I had nightmares for months. I had dreams after one other one, that I can remember, too; after reading How I Learned to Fly, I dreamt that I was flying and couldn't get down.
 
I don't think it really scared me; it was just really weird. I kept going up and up in my dreams, but never down. Oddment.

It really is one of the best. I think I still have it somewhere. ::hunts::
 
I tried them when I was younger,and hated them. Since myself did not like it back then,I probably won't like it now.
 
I still have most of the Goosebumps books that I had in my youth. Good times. Might be interesting to go back and read through them as an adult and see if my favorites are still worthy of that distinction.
 
I loved Goosebumps too!! I used to go to the public library and check out all the ones I hadn't read. I think he was only up to 30+ books when I was into them and I read them all. They were amazing!

For what it's worth, I couldn't tell you a single bit about any of the books right now, but i do remember that I loved them all.
 
These were great, but there were too many, I never even put a dent in the number out there.

Some got a little too weird for me, but most were lovely.
 
OMG i used to love these books to death. :) my favourite books when I was little.

Horror at camp jelly jam was my favourite and also dont go into the basement.
