To state the obvious, I'm here because I love books. Books allow you to see into others' minds, to experience new worlds, to escape reality. I like to read just about anything, but I really love to read murder mysteries, fantasy, and science fiction. I'd like to be a librarian someday but I don't really know what kind of schooling I need to do that. I went to my local library to ask them about career oppurtunies, but the guy there I would have needed to talk to scares me, so I left. I tend to be a pessimistic person. I don't like people.

Then you've come to the right place. It is my personal belief that the forum is being run by a sophisticated AI designed to test our responses in preparation for the coming alien invasion. No people here.

What you need to do about the librarian is wait till he's alone and then attack him in the car park. You don't need to kill him or anything, just maim him enough that he can't come into work for a few days. Then you can take the opportunity to talk to his younger, and more alluring, assistant.

Someone I went to school with became a librarian. She did an English Lit degree I think. But I don't know if you actually need a degree to get the job. And I'm not really friends with her to ask. I get all this info from my mum who whenever she sees the mum of this particular person has a little game of My Daughter's Better Than Your Daughter, which of course we're winning. :D

Thanks :) Im undecided if im keeping it yet, too many insane bunnies around here as it is!!! :D

But it's Max! You have to keep it. Max is me in bunny form.

Welcome!

I worked at the Dean's Office for the library at my university. The Dean actually had a chemistry degree for her undergrad degree and then got some degree relating to librarians for her advanced degree. I don't remember what it is called, unfortunately. I know there are schools out there who are set up to produce librarians, perhaps you could do a google search.

My little sister went for a job interview yesterday for a trainee librarian position - apparently she would need to work for 1 year to gain the necessary experience and then she will start a vocational qualification course (can't remember the exact name of it). She has just finished university but I am not quite sure whether a degree was a pre-requisite for the job - she studied American Studies so it certainly isn't particularly relevant. I think gaining experience is definately the first step though so I agree with Litany in that you should incapacitate the scary librarian and talk to the nice one about how to get started :D

Welcome Raraavis :)
I know what you mean there was this lady librarian who really creeps me out. Everytime she looked at me i felt incredibly guilty like i've done something wrong, some people are just real todgers!

To work at a library, I don't know that you need all that much special training, but to be in charge of a decent library, you need a Masters in Library Science. The only university I know of that offers it is the University of Texas at Austin. I'm sure there are others. Not sure what you get as a bachelors before that. I bet if you asked nicely, they'd send you some info.

Like the username, btw.

Welcome, dude.

Cheers, Martin
