I'm searching for a children's historical fiction book about a boy named Gurth ... At the beginning of the story, he leaves home with his dog, Wulf, and an iron arm-band wrapped in tar and cloth. Eventually, he makes a friend, Wiglaf ... Gurth goes on some sea-voyage, and while he is gone, Wiglaf cleans the arm-band. Gurth returns to find that the arm-band is actually a crown ...

I'm sure Gurth had a dog, Fangs? perhaps that's why I thought 'Ivanhoe'
