Handle with care: Racism

I totally agree. It's a shame that the people in charge can't think of this on their own. One of the problems in politics here, though--and maybe politics everywhere, though I'm not sure--is that no one can take a strong stance on anything because they're terrified of losing votes. So nothing gets done, like the perfect American equality they tell us exists when we're in grade school. Well, that's about as real as Santa once you hit the real world.

The university I went to had a lot of students from India, Pakistan, and the Bahamas. We had a giant food court that was very open in terms of space and a giant buffet line that continued through the entire establishment. One day, a line of Indian students were conversing to themselves and a white kid walked over and yelled: "speak english!" very aggressively at them and then proceeded to walk away laughing. I approached the students and suggested taking the matter to the Ombudsperson, who would handle complaints. The kid would've been expelled as universities don't want to get an "unfriendly" reputation. Unfortunately, the students didn't desire to press the matter appropriately.

That's sad; they should have taken it to an authority. Personally, I don't care if people speak foreign languages in public as long as they learn enough English that they don't struggle. Amongst friends, they should speak whatever language is the easiest for them to converse clearly in--I'm sure the genius who yelled at them would refuse to speak anything but English in an Indian or Pakistani environment.

What a brainless brute! I am a very calm person by nature but if I were to witness that scene my foot would found his asphalt in a nanosecond.

For some reasons, Americans seem to think that if you speak another language in public, you can't speak English. It's just silly. If someone is speaking Chinese in public, they are probably just smarter than everyone else in the room. Besides, other languages are great for when you'd rather people not overhear your conversation.
