Happy Birthday direstraits!

Cathy C said:
Well, the literal definition is an old archaic term, direstraits, meaning "to drink". It's come to be associated with high society cocktail parties, where important people in different businesses can meet each other.

"Hobnobbing" is presently considered meeting important people in a social setting. A lowly file clerk invited to a fancy party given by the CEO would be seen by his friends to be "hobnobbing with the big wigs".
Strange - from what I've been reading though hobnobs seems to suggest that it's a kind of a tidbit or confectionary of some sort.

Thanks for your definitions, Cathy!

Cathy, don't say another word! If these foreign types find out about the best biscuit in the world they'll all start eating them and we won't have enough for us.

I see. All these years I thought it was mongoose when in actual fact it's monsoon. And I had the two mixed up. I feel such a fool
Hey you were serious? I honestly thought you were kidding. :)

I was also kidding, and I want to say Singapore is not overrun by snakes or mongooses after all. (we're close neighbours, and I don't want to be killed by Singaporeans). :) :)

No problems mate, let's hobnob, and have some hobnobs, as well!

It's raining like a mongoose in Hammersmith at the moment. I'm off to the pub and I shall raise a glass in birthday wishes to Direstraits and RaVen. Enjoy yourselves. I'll be back on Thursday (another court appearance tomorrow - will they never leave me alone? What about Magna Carta? Did she die in vain?).

HAPPY BIRTHDAY!! Direstraits!
and my ermm late congrats on your wedding!

Billy would prefer red wine--as i can remember. ;)

:D :D :D

Okay, let's clear up a little confusion here.
In Southeast Asia there are two seasons. Wet and Wetter! No, really, the dry season and the monsoon season. Monsoons are rain systems that come along just about every day and dump rain all day.
Hobnob, pretty much follows Cathy's definition, but as Billy let slip, they are also these delightful cookies that the Brits keep all to themselves. I WANT A HOBNOB!!!!

ds, I remember two phrases from my time there, good-night and delicious. My mother says that I used to converse easily with our maid. And my sisters and I went to Highgate Hill. I dare you to find it, although my sisters would probably be more overcome with nostalgia than I , we moved to the States when I was four, they were eight and twelve.

Just wanted to thank all of you who have wished me, it was a lovely day, made even nicer by your wishes (watercrystal, thanks for your kind wish on my wedding! :) )

:D

p.s. cajunmama, i've never heard of Highgate Hill , but I'll keep you posted. :) :)

p.p.s funny I hadn't acted on my suspicion and googled on "hob nobs" - now that i have, i see that they're made by McV's - my favourite digestive biscuits while I was studying in England (when they printed the full "McVities" instead of "McV" on the wrapping). I'll shop around and see if I can help deplete the world's store of hob nobs soon...

p.p.p.s Martin, I saved you a piece of choco moist - I didn't forget you, and was hoping you'd show up. :)

Hmmmm. Been thinking ds, maybe Highgate Hill was in Singapore. I'll have to check with my sister on that!
