Help identify an old childrens book

Please can you help me, I am trying to recall the name of a book I used to love as a child.

It was about 3 babies that were found on the doorstep of a rich bachelor, the children were taken in an raised by the man's nanny. I think it was 2 girls and a boy.

Later on in the book the man is lost at sea.

One of the girls, who's name I think is Margaret or Margot or Marjorie, gets a part as an understudy in a film. The boy wants to be a cameraman.

The character of Nanny is described as looking like a cottage loaf (wonderful description).

I know it is not much to go on, i can't remember much but what I do remember is that I loved the book and read it lots and would love to read it again.

If you can't help please could you put me in the direction of somewhere that may be able to?

This sounds like a conflation of several of the Noel Streatfield books about orphan children being brought up by various odd relatives or guardians. "Ballet Shoes" and "Theatre Shoes" (which has been renamed recently to fit in with the other titles) have similar plots, but in "Ballet Shoes" the children are all girls. There are some others which are in the same style and several have theatrical backgrounds.

Noel Sreatfeild rang a bell and a quick google revealed the book to be "The Children on The Top Floor"

Thank you.
