Hey, this is probably a long shot but does anyone know a book series (probably from the 80's but definitely pre 1995) about a boy who has a owl sidekick and they communicate with each other telepathically? I am looking for this for a friend and he didn’t give me much info. If anyone knows this book please post here, thanks.
 
Mercedes Lackey has a huge series of books that take place in Valdemar (her created world), and one of the trilogies is Owlsight, Owlknight and Owlflight....it sounds similar to what you've described. I highly recommend the Valdemar books, by the way. :)

Those are the first books that I came across when starting this search, but all three of those books were written post 1995. I know Owl is not in the name of the book and in one of the books the owl is kidnapped, not sure if that helps or not.
